Lake Chapala Society rocks out with summer music fest

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) attracted an enthusiastic crowd for its July 30 Looking Through a Lavalamp music fest, with around 300 guests flocking to the garden grounds to rock out to dance tunes from the 1960s and 1970s.

The entertainment program opened with a set of jazz classics brilliantly performed by young musicians from the University of Guadalajara’s Big Band CUCBA.  Their feel-good repertoire provided a great sound backdrop during the cocktail and lunch hour.

Bartenders poured a selection of mixed drinks cleverly named to fit the party’s psychedelic era theme. Tempting buffet spreads were catered by local restaurants Alex’s Pasta Bar and Number 4.

With the party-goers fully fueled up, the Cosmic Rockets took stage on the gazebo, getting them off their feet for a couple of hours of tireless dancing to blast-from-the-past rock music.

Under the leadership of special events coordinator Karla Boentgen, LCS appears to have taken stock of the community’s changing demographics, putting together social activities with appeal for the community’s baby-boomer generation retirees. Three years ago, the organization substituted its traditional Canada Day-July Fourth events for the summer music fest.  Judging by the turnout and lively ambiance, that was a smart decision. The now annual happening has become a magnet for folks with a spirit for reliving their youth and getting together to shake a leg.
