St. Andrew’s Anglican

Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! On this Easter Sunday, April 16, St. Andrew’s Anglican Church joins with Christians all over the world to celebrate the miracle of Jesus’s resurrection.

There will be festival services (with choir) at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Next week, the congregation bids farewell to the Rev. Robbin Del Nagro, who has served as interim priest for several months. There will be a potluck lunch immediately after church to let Robbin know how much the congregation appreciates her care during a time of transition, and to wish her well on the next stage of her life’s journey.

Every Sunday, the feeding programs supported by St. Andrew’s welcome donations of non-perishable food items. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to rice, beans, pasta, oil, and salt.

St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Abundant Life

Easter means different things to different people. Some think of it as the season of the Easter egg. For others, Easter is the time to remember how the Israelites were brought out of captivity by the mighty hand of God. Still others think that it is only a time for Christians as they celebrate Jesus rising from the dead. Come this Sunday and discover that all of these play a part as God allows history to give room to new life.  Jesus is risen!  The tomb is empty!  Life is being offered.

Abundant Life Church is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico and has services for everyone. An English-language worship service is held each Sunday, 10 a.m. and Bible study Wednesday, 3 p.m. Spanish-language services are Sunday, noon. Bible studies are on Wednesday, 6:45 p.m. A children’s ministry is held Saturday, noon and the youth meet Sunday, 6:30 p.m.

Abundant Life Church is located at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 140 in San Antonio Tlayacapan, a block from SuperLake. For more information, call (331) 417-7038.

Little Chapel is open Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. for silent prayer and worship in the sanctuary and memorial prayer garden.

San Andres English

Good Friday, April 14, the Solemn Liturgy of the Passion of the Lord will be celebrated in English at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary on the Ajijic Plaza (north-west corner), 3 p.m.

“Easter Sunday Mass is our Alleluia: our song of praise to the Risen Christ who is our life and whose triumph over death we proclaim to all the world,” says Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min.

“According to ancient tradition, this day is a vigil for the Lord  (Exodus 12:42).  We are reminded to have our lamps burning ready to be like those awaiting their master’s return, so that when he arrives, he will find us wide awake and seat us at his banquet.”

Fr. Royston will offer the homily “Alleluia!” at San Andres Catholic Church’s English-language service of Easter Sunday Solemn High Mass, April 16, 9 a.m.

San Andres is located at the corner of Ramon Corona and Parroquia, one block from the Ajijic main plaza.

Lake Chapala Baptists

Says Brother Bob Hendrick: “The Super Bowl of Christian Holy Days is Resurrection Day (Easter). It attracts a lot of attention from folks who may not keep up with all the action the rest of the season. Attendance and fanfare usually exceed the norm. There are always plenty of activities connected to the date that have nothing to do with the purpose and meaning of the day. Of course, unlike the Super Bowl, there is not only one location for the event. And the ‘winner’ has already been declared.

“The events of the rest of the year do not build up to the celebration of Resurrection Day. They all flow from faith in the resurrection of Jesus, Messiah. The schedule of service at Lake Chapala Baptist will be a little different for April 16. There will be no Sunday School on that day. The worship service will begin at 10, will include extra music and varied presentations to call us to remember the proof of Jesus’ power over sin, death, and the grave, and will end before noon. All are invited.”

Brother Hendrick will give the sermon Easter Sunday, April 16.

The Lake Chapala Baptist Church is located at Santa Margarita 147 in Riberas del Pilar.

Presbyterian Church

April 13, 10 a.m. Lakeside Presbyterian Church will have a Maundy Thursday Service of Communion, with Pastor Ross’s meditation entitled, “Little Children.”

Good Friday, April 14, a traditional “Tenebrae” (or “Service of Darkness”) will be held 10 a.m., in acknowledgement of the suffering and death Jesus endured on our behalf.

Easter morning, April 16, 10 a.m. everyone is invited to join a great celebration of the Risen Christ, when Pastor Ross will speak on the topic, “What is Truth?”

Lakeside Presbyterian is located at San Jorge 250 in Riberas del Pilar. Turn toward the lake at Mom’s Restaurant and the church is two blocks down on the right. English-language services begin each Sunday, 10 a.m. and Spanish-language services are 9 a.m. and noon. Everyone is welcome.

Jewish Congregation

Shabbat Torah services are held the first and third Saturday of the month, 10 a.m., and Shabbat evening services and potluck every second and fourth Friday, 6 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation. The synagogue is located at Sta. Margarita 113, Riberas del Pilar (mountainside of the Carretera, diagonally across from Mom’s Restaurant). Call (376) 766-2668 or see www.lakesidejews.com.

Home Church Int’l

Say Pastors Paul and Susana Allen: “What is usually called Easter is the most important day on the Christian calendar.  As our Savior has suffered our punishment for sin and rising to overcome death for us, Resurrection Day has no equal. It is safest and completely accurate to refer to this event by its significance. One source of the word Easter was from an Anglo-Saxon goddess named Eostre or Ostara, the goddess of the sunrise and the Spring. The direction of the sunrise, East, is named for her. As you can see, the wrong emphasis and reference. Then, in the fifth century A.D., the Frankish Church (Germans who settled in Rome) named the festival Ostern. Again, a festival about the sunrise doesn’t cut the mustard.

“Human beings have a leaning toward nature and the mundane. So, we attach fashion, toys, egg hunts to this event to reduce it to materialism and entertainment. And, what about all Jesus went through for us? Yes, there’s something wrong about the picture we’ve created. Since Christianity is not a religion, maybe this calls for a solid of repentance and humility. Christianity is a Person, and His way of life. Home Church International is looking for host homes as meeting places for this close-knit fellowship of believers.”
