Lake Chapala Baptist

Says Brother Bob Hendrick: “When my brother-in-law entered his second marathon, he knew he would ‘hit the wall’ at about the 20-mile point and he asked me to run the last 10k with him to keep him going. ‘Hitting the wall’ is when stored glycogen is expended and your mind and body begin to tell you it time to quit. It is sometimes called the half-way point of the race, the point where gut takes over when muscle and mind want to give up. The Bible tells believers to encourage one another. Look around and you will find folks who have used up their stores of energy and inspiration and need someone to come alongside to keep them running to the finish line. Biblical faith is not something that is just a personal thing.”

Sunday, August 6, 11 a.m., Brother Hendrick will give the sermon at the worship service of the Lake Chapala Baptist Church, located at Santa Margarita 147, Riberas del Pilar.

Lakeside Presbyterian

“God wants us to be something before doing something: 1) Be a living testimony 2) Be spiritually prepared 3) Be ready to let God change you 4) Be ready to meet God face-to-face.” Pastor Wayne Cook will deliver the sermon at the Sunday, August 6, service of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church. His sermon, “Getting Ready for the Battle,” is based on Joshua 5:1ff.

Lakeside Presbyterian is located at San Jorge 250 in Riberas del Pilar. Turn toward the lake at Mom’s Restaurant and the church is two blocks down on the right. English-language services begin each Sunday, 10 a.m. and Spanish-language services are 9 a.m. and noon. Everyone is welcome.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

In his message this Sunday at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Fr. Bryan Beveridge will remind us that we serve God, who invites all who are hungry to receive food and drink without cost. As we hear the story of Jesus feeding the multitudes, we will be challenged to identify the things that God has given us that we might offer for the healing and feeding of a broken and starving world.

Worship begins at 10 a.m., and the bilingual children’s Sunday School starts at 9:45 a.m.  “Coffee Hour,” a time of fellowship and welcome, follows the service.

The Company of Gentlemen invites all men of the community to join them for their monthly breakfast Wednesday, August 9, 8:30 a.m. in the church kitchen.

There will be “pick-up” choirs August 6 and August 27. What’s a “pick-up choir?” It’s your chance to help lead the worship service with music. Everyone is welcome to sing – you won’t even have to wear special clothes. Rehearsals will begin at 9 a.m. for the 10 a.m. service.

If you would like to help provide school supplies for our Sunday School kids, they will be collected Sunday, August 6. Notebooks, pencils, paper, rulers, scissors, glue sticks, markers, small calculators, pencil cases – anything for school will be greatly appreciated and put to good use.

The St. Andrew’s Summer Picnic will be held in the Garden Thursday, August 10.  Social hour begins at 1 p.m. and the Picnic Meal (including sloppy joes and coleslaw) will be at 2 p.m. Cost is 200 pesos.

Every Sunday, the feeding programs supported by St. Andrew’s welcome donations of non-perishable food items. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to garbanzos, lentils, pasta, oil, and salt.

St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

The Lunch Bunch will meet at Manix Restaurant at 11:15 a.m. The Bible Study group will not meet in the Little Chapel Fellowship Hall on Tuesday, August 8. It will resume at a date to be announced, when it will continue its exploration of Paul’s letters in chronological order.

Little Chapel by the Lake

“Idolatry,” says Pastor Ken Armstrong, “is when we place any created thing on a level equal to or higher than God. Anything, no matter how dear we may consider it. In fact, that’s exactly the point.”

During the month of August, Little Chapel will present a series about idolatry entitled, “Who’s Your Daddy?” On Sunday, August 6, the series leads off with “Where’s Your Heart?” drawn from Matthew 6:21.

Non-denominational Christian, English-language Sunday worship service is at 11 a.m.  Everyone is invited to stay for a friendly comida (church meal) after the service.

Little Chapel is also open Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. for silent prayer and worship in the sanctuary and memorial prayer garden. Everyone is welcome. Communion and anointing are available.

For more information, see the display ad in this section.

Unitarian Universalists

The Sunday, August 6 presentation by esteemed local film expert, Marshall Krantz, is entitled “Film, Education, and Empathy.” Lew Crippen is the service leader.

The Unitarians meet 10:30 a.m. at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar, opposite the bell tower, on the north side of the Carretera. If you have any questions, call Trudy Crippen at 766-1119. For more information, see uuflc.org.

Abundant Life Church

Pastor Gary Neighbor opines: “The world is full of religious material. From Bibles to photos of past figures, including Jesus, there is a sense of security found in having these things because it makes us feel like God is close by and there to help and protect us. This feeling is undeniable, but is it true? Does God protect us if we hold a Bible out or wear a cross around our necks?”

This Sunday, August 6, Pastor Neighbor takes the congregation to the scriptures to answer these questions. “God wants us to draw close to him. Let’s do that together this Sunday together.”

Abundant Life Church is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico and has services for everyone. An English-language worship service is held each Sunday, 10 a.m. and Bible Study Wednesday, 3 p.m. Spanish-language services are Sunday at noon. Spanish-language Bible studies are Wednesday, 6:45 p.m. A children’s ministry is held Saturday, noon, and youth meet Sunday, 6:30 p.m.

Abundant Life Church is located at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 140, San Antonio Tlayacapan, a block from SuperLake. For more information, call 331-417-7038 (cel).

San Andres English

“It is wonderful for us to be here today as we celebrate the transfigured Christ, the Christ of prophecy, in whom we have believed.  In the shining cloud, the spirit is seen; from it, the voice of the Father is heard: This is my Son, my beloved, in whom is all my delight.  Listen to Him.”

So says Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min., who will offer the homily “Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord” at San Andres Catholic Church’s English-language service on Sunday, August 6, 9 a.m.

The San Andres English congregation has their “First Sunday of the Month Food Drive” this Sunday to help support the children at Villa Infantil orphanage in Jocotepec and the sisters who care for them. Consider bringing a non-perishable food item, toilet tissue, cleaning products, and the like to Sunday’s Liturgy.

San Andres is located at the corner of Ramon Corona and Parroquia, one block from the Ajijic main plaza

Home Church Int’l

Pastors Paul and Susana Allen endeavor to teach the true origin of man. Evolutionists hang on to the single-cell origin of mankind, claiming it is a “progression” through apes, etc. Being all-knowing, God has no need to experiment. As believers in the most-high God, we abide by the authority He has provided: the Bible. Original man in Adam was made perfect in the image and spiritual likeness of God. Man is a spirit, has a soul, and lives in a body. Man was placed in Eden, and there in his holy estate exercised his free moral agency. Adam and Eve were tempted by Satan. Both chose to rebel against God their Creator and suffered the fall into sin. This led to death in man. Therefore, we learn from God’s Word that only personal faith in God can bring redemption to any or all of Adam’s descendants: mankind.

God’s people, true Christians, are not interested in creation arguments. The pastors assure us that this issue is not understood as a saving doctrine. Therefore, its importance is not vital enough to generate verbal conflict. We adhere to the biblical account as faithful revelation from its author, God.
