Little Chapel by the Lake

“There is a strange borderland between truth and science fiction,” says Pastor Ken Armstrong. “Billionaire geniuses like SpaceX CEO Elon Musk are spending vast sums to explore their theory that there is a truth ‘out there’ being hidden from us that science has yet to explain. I couldn’t agree more!”

“Life in the Matrix” is the topic of conversation at the Little Chapel Sunday, November 19. It is drawn from James 4, Acts 1, and John 20.

Non-denominational Christian, English-language Sunday worship service is at 11 a.m. Everyone is invited to stay for a friendly comida (church meal) after the service.

For more information, see the display ad in this section.

Unitarian Universalists

The Rev. Daniel O’Connell of First Unitarian Church of Houston will preach via video on “A UU View of Taoism” at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship service Sunday, November 19.

Rev. O’Connell will look at the three jewels of Taoism — humility, moderation and compassion — in a UU context and see that “peace is who you are without a story.” Fred Koesling is the service leader.

The Unitarians meet 10:30 a.m. at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar, opposite the bell tower, on the north side of the Carretera. Questions? Call Fred at 766-1458.

Lake Chapala Baptist

Says Brother Bob Hendrick: “I have had the refreshing experience of clearing the cache of a slow or glitchy computer program or app. Cache is info stored so that a program is not starting from scratch when you use it. Cache is ‘baggage’ that is reopened to start new work with a context. However, there can be so much baggage cached that a program is cluttered to the point that it has no room to do new work. Then the cache needs to be cleared … not because the computer is weak or tired, but because it is cluttered. I have also had the refreshing experience of a Sabbath’s rest. The word “Sabbath” does not mean Saturday or Sunday. Its meaning is closer to “intermission.” It is a day to clear a person’s cache. Even if he is not tired or weak, a person’s programming can be cluttered. Let me recommend a Sabbath’s rest to help remedy a glitchy life.”

Sunday, November 19, 11 a.m., Brother Hendrick will give the sermon at the worship service of the Lake Chapala Baptist Church, located at Santa Margarita 147, Riberas del Pilar.

Abundant Life Church

Says Pastor Gary Neighbor: “There are all kinds of temptation in the world, some large and some that no one is even aware that you are battling. As believers, we are called to overcome evil with good, meaning that Jesus helps us. One of the first steps in overcoming temptation is learning what Jesus says about them.”

Sunday, November 19, Pastor Matthew will minister in both English and Spanish, speaking on what the scriptures say about temptation and our victory over them.

Abundant Life Church is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico and has services for everyone. An English-language worship service is held each Sunday, 10 a.m. and Bible Study Wednesday, 3 p.m. Spanish-language services are Sunday at noon. Spanish-language Bible studies are Wednesday, 6:45 p.m. A children’s ministry is held Saturday, noon, and youth meet Sunday, 6:30 p.m.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Sunday, November 19, at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Mother Liza Spangler will explain why the Gospel of the Talents is frequently used to urge us to use our God-given gifts wisely and well. However, this Gospel also teaches us a lesson in how our image of God can affect both our lives and the person we become – for better or for worse.

The Holy Eucharist begins 10 a.m., and the bilingual children’s Sunday School starts at 9:45 a.m. Coffee Hour, a time of fellowship and welcome, follows the service.

Every Sunday, the feeding programs supported by St. Andrew’s welcome donations of non-perishable food items. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to rice, beans, pasta, oil and salt.

Whenever you want to recycle something, don’t forget our resale shop, Todo Bueno.  Every donation or consignment made benefits St. Andrew’s outreach ministry, which supports a multitude of charities at Lakeside. Clothing, kitchenware, electronics, bric-a-brac, furniture, appliances, books, collectibles, etc., are all welcome. Todo Bueno, open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is located on the highway next to S&S Auto in Riberas del Pilar.

St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Lakeside Presbyterian

The church is located at San Jorge 250 in Riberas del Pilar. Turn toward the lake at Mom’s Restaurant and it is two blocks down on the right. English-language services begin each Sunday, 10 a.m. and Spanish-language services are 9 a.m. and noon. Everyone is welcome.

San Andres English

“Christ’s family, the Church, today holds festival in honor of its Head, and brings to him the talents of a good wife, devoted sons, and faithful servants.”

So says Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min., who will offer the homily “Christ, the Head of His Household,” at San Andres Catholic Church’s English-language service on Sunday, November 19, 9 a.m.

After Mass, the San Andres English congregation will have a “Second Sunday White Envelope Offering” for the outreach projects of their congregation.  This offering supports many local charities:  six student scholarships, Villa Infantil, Operation Feed, Cruz Roja, Niños Incapacitados, El Corazon del Ancianos, the Ancianos Christmas Dinner, the San Andrés fiesta, Niños y Jovenes, and scholarships for local Seminarian students.

San Andres is located at the corner of Ramon Corona and Parroquia, one block from the Ajijic main plaza.

Home Church Int’l

Have you ever heard the expression, “It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you believe in something?” Such a homespun philosophy couldn’t be more superbly wrong. Many isms and cults out there today allow or propose all sorts of deviant practices. Some radicalisms proclaim if one doesn’t adhere to them, they might well face a brutal death sentence. Thus, the real mandate in life is what to believe, and why.

Another false assumption is, “Well, as long as you believe in a religion, you’re doing the right thing.” The problem is that a “religion” is mere ceremony and practices. It doesn’t really have to believe in a personal, interacting deity. Jehovah God has revealed Himself for many millennia as the Creator and the one, true living God, revealing Himself personally through His Son, Jesus Christ. Many often say that Christianity is a religion. Wrong. Christianity is a Person, Jesus Christ, and His way of life. Pastors Paul and Susana Allen remind us that we are spirit, we have a soul, and live in a body. Following Christ Jesus reveals the true faith.
