Competition fierce at November Ajijic culinary meeting

The categories chosen for the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) November 13 meeting were Eastern European main dish and dessert.

pg21Avril Stephenson walked away with first place in the main dish category with her Hungarian goulash. Barbara Baker took second with her Hungarian mushroom soup and Julie Miller third with her Hungarian potatoes and sausage.

Stephenson shared the people’s choice award with Judith Greenberg’s chicken paprikash, which also took the presentation prize.

In the dessert category, there was a tie for first place between Carol Westbrook (szarlotka) and Janet Jorch (Hungarian honey cake). Both also shared the people’s choice award.

Lydia Cortez’ fruitful kolacky won second place, and Patrick Waite, with his Mazurek Polish Royal mazurka, came in third. Westbrook’s dessert won the presentation award.

The judges for this event were Zhanna Sosensky, Ann Szarka and Gosha Hernandez.

CASA’s final meeting for the year will be held Monday, December 18, 4 p.m. at La Mision. Categories will be botanas/appetizers and holiday desserts.
