The corpse of a middle-aged man was found December 21 near the summit of the Cerro de San Miguel overlooking downtown Chapala.
The grisly discovery was reported to authorities by a local resident who was hiking up the hill to collect pods from a guaje tree.
The body was dressed in a gray shirt, navy blue pants, a dark jacket and sneakers. Police on the scene described the individual as a heavy set male approximately 50 years old. Due to the advanced state of putrefaction and the absence of personal documents, he has not yet been identified.
The remains were transported to the Jalisco Forensics Institute morgue in Guadalajara for an autopsy to determine whether the deceased was the victim of violence or died from an accidental fall off the pathway.
