Chapala recognizes heroic officers

Two officers of the Chapala government received commendations for valor in the line of duty at a ceremony held Friday, April 20 on the esplanade outside City Hall.

Police officer Juan José Torres Sandoval was honored for foiling the hold-up of a downtown coffee shop early Monday, April 16, when he caught the culprit red-handed and took him into custody.

At a preliminary hearing held April 18 at the regional criminal court, the presiding judge ruled that the detention was carried out legally and ordered that the suspect identified as Víctor “N” be held in preventive detention for a period of one year pending trial for attempted aggravated robbery.

Also recognized for bravery was Jorge González Góngora, the firefighter who suffered burns in a flashover incident while battling a brush fire that broke out April 7 near Hacienda la Labor. He remains on medical leave while recovering from his injuries.

Hailing the two men as exemplary public servants, acting Mayor Oscar España announced that each of them will receive a monetary bonus equivalent to two weeks’ salary and extra vacation time in appreciation for their heroism.
