Tree planting call for help

Scientists say that we each need 20 trees to provide the clean air we breathe every day. Chapala Ecology Director Rafael Aguilar and Ajijic Delegado Chuni Medeles have designated Saturday, June 16, as Reforestation Day for the Ajijic Malecon, including the area known as the Jardin Internacional.

They intend to replace those trees killed by unknown folks with new trees in the hope that with better supervision and public awareness they will be left to thrive and some day provide a shady retreat along the western end of the Malecon.

They ask for your help – personally or by sending your gardener – on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Gather first at the Roman Forum (in front of AbbeyField) and from there groups will be formed to dig and plant. The municipal government has provided thousands of trees for the area, so this is just the beginning of a reforested Ajijic.

If you cannot physically help out, think of bringing some cold water and/or other non-alcoholic beverages. The Casa de Cafe is offering discounted coffee to the volunteers.
