Plogging race promotes cleaner Ajijic this Saturday

Pro-environment activists are uniting Saturday, August 4, in Ajijic in side-by-side programs to encourage litter clean-up and earth-friendly consumption of disposable plastic products.

pg24bThe Carrera Limpia Plogging event is designed as a fun eco-athletic contest in which participants will pick up and classify loose trash found in different areas of the town.

Plogging is a unique jogging, bending, squatting and stretching workout routine combined with litter collection that originated in Sweden.

Lakeside’s first group activity of this type is jointly organized by Guardianes de la Ecologia, Zoo Vivero and Huarachess Ajijic, under sponsorship of the Lake Chapala Society.

Teams made up of ten children, adolescents and adults and individual litter collectors are called to meet at the central plaza, 4 p.m., for the assignment of areas of attack and the distribution of collection bags and tools. Refuse to be separated as either reusable plastic, glass and metal materials or non-recyclable items are to be delivered to the designated deposit point at the Malecón.

Assorted prizes will be raffled off among participants at the end of the race.

The Eco-Plastico craft workshop employing discarded plastic as raw material will take place simultaneously, from 3 to 6 p.m., around the stone fountain located near the Ajijic pier.

A plastic awareness art activity, run by Somos Eco Ribera, is open to the public free of charge.
