What is Thrill the World?

“Thrill the World” – now a major annual event in Ajijic held in October – sees friends, families and local residents join together with thousands of people around the globe to celebrate Michael Jackson’s talent by dancing simultaneously to his mega-hit “Thriller”.

pg14But this event is more than just dancing to a six-minute song. It’s a “global community” project that inspires people to break down barriers and connect with others of different religions, races and political and economic persuasions. It also encourages people to step up as leaders, visionaries and creators, and take up the reins of environmental stewardship.

Elliott Joachim started the “Thriller” event in Ajijic in 2010 with a mere seven participants. Everyone thought they were crazy but they had so much fun dressing up as zombies and doing the same dance in sync with thousands of people around the world.

In 2016, the zombie horde had swelled to 103 people who managed to raise more than 200,000 pesos for the local Cruz Roja through sponsorships from friends, families and even complete strangers.

Rehearsals for “Thrill the World Ajijic 2018” begin on Saturday, September 8, 1-3 p.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center on the main plaza. They continue on Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 1-3 p.m., until the show itself on Saturday, October 27, 4 p.m., when hundreds of spectators will pack the plaza.

Anyone can come and learn the dance; no experience is necessary. Plenty of dance captains will be on hand around to help you, so come and have fun and raise some money for the Red Cross.
