Needlepushers continues its work of knitting and sewing garments and visiting local kindergartens to give the original, handmade creations to children.
A new project this year was making bags for boys and girls and filling them with personal hygiene products, school supplies, socks, toys and a few other treasures. The group visited kindergartens in Santa Cruz de la Soledad, San Juan Tecomotlán, San Nicolás de Ibarra, Riberas del Pilar, San Antonio Tlayacapán, and the Hope House orphanage for boys in Ixtlahuacán de Membrillos to gift these bags to approximately 350 appreciative children.
Last spring before Semana Santa, 290 kindergarteners in Jocotepec and San Juan Cosalá were outfitted with handmade dresses and vests. Distribution of over 200 handknitted sweaters will start in November before the cold weather sets in.
Needlepushers, established in 1962 by Neill James, meets every Tuesday in the board room of the south campus of Lake Chapala Society. New members are always welcome. All supplies are acquired through membership dues and donations of fabric, sewing notions, yarn and cash. The group is also in need of travel-size toiletries for the bags described above. Donations can be left at the LCS office.
