Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is offering a new course that should appeal to many here at Lakeside: From Age-ing to Sage-ing – A Profound New Vision of Growing Older.
This eight-session adult program is based on the book of the same name by Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and Ronald Miller.
The key idea is a new way to understand aging, to become an elder and to use this natural process to keep growing and giving. This “new” elder is one who has transitioned from full-time involvement in a career or child rearing to a new phase of life that has a balance of caring for self and others. This new elder is likely to spend much of his or her time in service to others, in spiritual pursuits, in new learning activities and in life review. He or she may pursue new (or old) passions, such as art, music, reading or gardening. Connections and repairing relationships with family and friends attain new significance at this time. Mental and physical health benefit from these activities.
The objective is for each person to gain a deep understanding of the new elder through experiences of reading and listening, reflection, discussion, journal writing and group discussion.
The course is delivered in three parts.
Part One: “The Theory of Eldering” provides exercises to increase understanding of the concepts and historical perspectives of elderhood.
Part Two: “Eldering and Personal Transformation.” Participants gain an understanding of elder consciousness and the skills of life review and repair.
Part Three: “Eldering and Social Transformation” focuses on becoming a mentor and healing the family, community, and the Earth through elder wisdom.
There is no cost for this program, but each participant needs the book “From Age-ing to Sage-ing A Profound New Vision of Growing Older,” available from Amazon Mexico for about 300 pesos,
The course starts Monday, November 19, 3-5 p.m. Sessions are held every two weeks through March 2019 at Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Chapala-Jocotepec Carretera 261 in Riberas del Pilar.
