People power was the driving force behind the latest Operación Amor spay and neuter clinic held March 2 and 3 on the campus of Chapala’s Secundaria Ténica 83.
The clinic put an end to the reproductive lives of 174 cats and dogs.
The free sterilizations program is available to local residents of limited means who appreciate the opportunity to prevent household pets from birthing unwanted litters.
The success of Operación Amor depends upon a strong, multi-national team of volunteers who assist in all aspects of running the clinic, from sign-in through surgery and post-operative attention.
While dozens of lakeside’s foreign residents have become regular volunteers, program coordinators Amalia Garcia and Cameron Peters say they are especially pleased with the growing number of Mexican citizens who have joined the cause.
A prime example is Chapala vet Daniel Borrego, who has graduated over many years from a volunteer surgeon to the key role as the program’s medical director.
A relative newcomer is Juan Santos Delegado, a tech specialist recruited by IBM co-worker García. After gaining experience in previous clinics, Santos is now in charge of the registration area where he has implemented an efficient, computerized system. In addition, his friendly, easy-going manner makes him a perfect fit for the task of guiding humble people on humane care for their furry companions.
