Promoting bicycle safety for lakeside children is one of the community social service missions of Axixic Masonic Lodge #31.
The plaza in Santa Cruz de la Soledad was a beehive of activity on Saturday, May 11, when Masons appeared for their annual visit to conduct the well-known “Tape-a-Bike” program for village youngsters. A total of 35 bikes were furnished with reflective tape and basic repairs during the session.
The local Masons launched the Tape-a-Bike project 12 years ago. Initially it consisted solely of applying reflective tape to the front and rear forks of kids’ bikes, commonly sold in this country without front and rear safety reflectors. The reflective tape is supplied free of charge by a donor in United States.
In 2009 the program was expanded to provide maintenance services. Tasks include oiling the bicycle chains to make for faster, smoother rides and extend the life of the two-wheelers. The Masons also replace worn out tubes and tires at no charge for the children.
During 2018 the Masons conducted seven Tape-a-Bike workshops at central plazas in North Shore towns from San Nicolas to Jocotopec, with a tally of 322 bikes serviced over 12 months. Each session is held on a Saturday morning, running from 10 a.m. until all requested bike services are completed.
Grateful beneficiaries in San Juan Cosala have dubbed the Masons’ volunteer crew as Los Angeles de Las Bicicletas (the bicycle angels).
