Getting in sync with modern times, the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) is expanding the long-standing Children’s Art Program with the introduction of classes in digital photography.
The new program was created on the premise that visual literacy, allied with technical ability, allows young people to communicate experiences quickly and effectively in ways that can broaden their possibilities in adult life.
Spearheaded by Allan MacGregor, Michael Searles and Miguel Serrano, the project is geared for local teenagers interested in self-expression through the lens. The trio also intend to tap into the knowledge and experience of the community’s many talented photographers for broader guidance in theory, practice and critique. They have acquired a collection of donated point-and-shoot digital cameras for the students.
The first 12-week course started Saturday, June 8 with eight eager youngsters in attendance. For the introductory session, Serrano focused on discussion of different photo genres and those most appealing to the pupils. The first generation of students will be prepped to become mentors in future courses.
