Lake Chapala Baptist

Galatians 5:23 states, “But the fruit of the Spirit is self-control.”

How many times have you said or done something and immediately wished you could take it back? How many times have you seen the look of hurt on someone’s face and knew you were the cause of it? Face it. You lost your cool. Or maybe you fell off the diet, hopped on the alcohol wagon or indulged too much with that chocolate dessert that’s making you feel like a failure. Your self-control button got turned off. It happens to the best of us.

But you see, one of the keys to successful living is self-control. That means controlling our emotions, desires, passions, and yes, even our tongues. Self-control is about self-discipline. The Bible compares it to sports. It says, “Run your race to win. Everyone who competes in the game exercises self-control in all things.” Not only is self-control essential to sports but also living.

Let’s look at a few tips to help when our self-control is lacking:

Identify: Be honest with yourself about where you lack self-control. If you can’t stop yourself from saying ugly things, walk away. Don’t give yourself the opportunity to say or do things that you know will hurt others.

Admit: If you have an addiction, admit it. That’s always the first step to recovery.

Ask: Then ask God for self-discipline.

Act: Finally, take action on that discipline, one day at a time.

Self-control is one of the fruits of the Spirit. It’s one of the ways for others to know that you are a child of God.

Brother John Whitener will be preaching all of August.

Lakeside Presbyterian

This Sunday, Dr. Wayne Cook’s sermon speaks of a 13th-century man, Richard of Chichester, with whom we may be unfamiliar. Dr. Cook reminds us we that we have likely heard of a prayer that he wrote, “Dear Lord, of thee three things I pray: to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day.” The musical, Godspell, turned these words into a song called “Day by Day.” These three simple phrases summarize the Christian way of life.

Home Church Int’l

An old song from the 50s talked about a man traveling through the desert. Eventually, he got surrounded by renegade Indians and said, “What am I doing here?” A challenging question. Most people would say that their purpose in life is to try hard and make the most of it. Makes sense but it’s also rather short and shallow.

There may be dozens of answers to life’s daunting question — what is the purpose of one’s life? This confronts us with ultimate conclusions in life, both here and beyond. Truly, we have only one day to live at a time but even that one day should be valuable enough to realize our purpose in existing. Just to please oneself really misses the mark. Matthew 5:16 hits the nail on the head: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.” For now and all eternity. Pastors Paul and Susana Allen pray that you seek His purpose as your own.

Riberas Meditation

Spiritual liberation – self-realization and enlightenment – come from knowledge, not from any action or activity, not from mental know-how, but rather from deep internal knowledge. Self-realization is not transformation, but a revelation of who you are and always have been.

Ramana Maharshi was the leading Indian spiritual teacher of the 20th century. He taught the practice of self-inquiry as the most direct way to self-knowledge. This is looking within yourself to see what is true – and what is not true – about your own sense of identity, your ego.

Weekly spiritual gatherings (satsangs) are a time to come together and listen to contemporary teachers’ instruction on Ramana’s teachings and then meditate as a group. They are hosted Wednesdays, 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the house of Richard and Carol, San Luis 73, Riberas del Pilar. There is no cost for satsang, and books and meditation materials will be provided. Space is limited. Register at 376-765-6976.

Abundant Life Church

How do you respond to things when they don’t go as planned? I’ve met many who turn very bitter in the wake of disaster or tragedy but I’ve also met people who seem to get even sweeter. Naturally, I want to be around those people as I try to figure out their secret. The Bible also has examples of these type of people. Come this Sunday, August 4, as we discover how tragedy can help make our lives sweeter.

Abundant Life Church is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico and has services for everyone. Weekly Sunday worship services, 10 a.m. and Bible study in English, Wednesdays, 3 p.m. Spanish language services, Sundays, noon, and Bible studies, Fridays, 6:45 p.m. Children’s ministry, Saturday, noon, and youth, Saturdays, 6 p.m.

Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month. Once a month, the women meet for a time of fellowship and the study of the Word of God (time and date announced each month).

The church is at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 140, San Antonio Tlayacapan, a block from Super Lake. Information: 331-417-7038.
