Unitarian Universalists

Unitarian Universalists know that we need not think alike to love alike. We are from many beliefs and backgrounds: people with religious backgrounds, people with none, people who believe in a God, people who don’t, and people who choose to let the mystery be.

Sunday, September 29, at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Roy Haynes will lead a program – “‘UU and You’ … Reflections of Diverse Paths to being a UU” – featuring various members of the Fellowship on how they have chosen to be Unitarian Universalists after coming from other faiths. They will help explain how such a seemingly diverse group of people are able to share their search for truth with each other in the same fellowship.

The Unitarians meet Sundays, 10:30 a.m., at Hidalgo 261, on the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar, opposite the Catholic Church. More information: 376-766-2299.

Lakeside Presbyterian

Sunday, September 29, Dr. Wayne Cook continues the Spiritual Gifts series, addressing Evangelism. Not everyone can share their faith in that way, but can share Christ using their own gifts. Dr. Cook examines two: testimonial and relational evangelism.

Becky and Bob Plinke share their testimony of being called to establish La Ola, a children’s home in Chapala.

This is a Communion Sunday.

LPC volunteers distributed 100 bags of clothing to psychiatric patients in Guadalajara, many abandoned by their families.  They are also establishing sources of clean water in communities where dozens of youths have died from heavy metals contamination. Children who cannot read or write continue to join LPC’s Literacy Program. What better gift for a child than becoming literate?

Lake Chapala Baptist

“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called and about which you have made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” (1 Timothy 6:12).

The gift of salvation is free, but after that, there needs to be some effort on our part. Faith is a living breathing thing. We have to put our trust in God and keep trusting Him through everything. God doesn’t want us to give in because we are discouraged. He wants us to press on and take hold of the eternal life He has waiting for us. First, we need to commit to serving the Lord. To be a servant means we put ourselves under the master and work to do His will. As a Christian, we need to take the servant posture. We need to stop looking for God to serve us and start doing what He needs us to do. Second, we need to trust His sovereignty. His direction for us is better than our plans. When we learn to trust God, our faith grows. Keep serving even when it isn’t fun anymore. Walk through the doors God opens for you and stop trying to open the ones He has closed. Most of all, don’t give up when you are discouraged. There is so much waiting for you on the other side.

Lake Chapala Baptist Church is at Santa Margarita 147, Riberas del Pilar. English-language Sunday school, 9:45 a.m.; English-language worship service, 11 a.m., and Spanish-language worship service, 12:30 p.m.

Abundant Life Church

How big is God?  That may seem like a silly question but the way you perceive God affects how you respond and obey Him. God is worthy of everything but for some He only deserves part time loyalty or a small portion of life … perhaps a Sunday.  Sunday, September 29, Pastor Gary shows us through the scriptures that those who see God as bigger than anything are the ones who have been impacted most by His greatness. God wants to be bigger than anything in your heart good or bad and therefore wants to visit with you and have a great impact on your life. God wants that impact to start today!

Abundant Life Church is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico and has services for everyone. Weekly Sunday worship services, 10 a.m. and Bible study in English, Wednesdays, 3 p.m. Spanish language services, Sundays, noon, and Bible studies, Fridays, 6:45 p.m. Children’s ministry, Saturday, noon, and youth, Saturdays, 6 p.m.

The church is at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 140, San Antonio Tlayacapan, a block from Super Lake. Information: 331-417-7038.

Home Church Int’l

In a general sense, people who are faithful in attending church are often referred to as “people of faith.” As complimentary as this sounds, it may or may not be true. Authentic Christian faith is when that faith bears fruit. If not, one might hear “Put up or shut up” or “Put your money where your mouth is” or “Talk is cheap.” These are caustic challenges to demonstrating the genuineness of our faith.

Most of us have heard, “By grace have you been saved through faith, not of works lest anyone should boast.” Grace is God’s unearned favor. Works (efforts) without faith is mere self-effort. However, we also find that, “So also faith, if it does not have works (deeds and actions of obedience to back it up), by itself is destitute of power (inoperative, dead).”  (James 2:17 AMPC). “Works” here simply means commitment and involvement, faithfulness in the mission of God’s church, gathered or alone. Pastors Paul and Susana Allen challenge us all to be people of faith by heeding His call upon us.
