Who could not be entranced by Mexico’s flamboyant and dramatic observances on Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead?
The brightly packaged tourist versions pique our curiosity. But they tell us nothing about what goes on in the hearts and minds of the friends and family who gather around the gravesites on this, perhaps most important holiday, in Mexico. Sunday, November 3, Janice Kimball will take us behind the scenes to explore the long and meaningful healing process that takes place on Day of the Dead. She will give us a greater appreciation of this day and a greater understanding of the complexities and valences of the seemingly simple Mexican way of life. Rev. Matt Alspaugh will explore where Day of the Dead fits within celebrations of remembrance, which for many cultures happen at this time of year.

Christ Church
Christ Church Lakeside, a parish of the Diocese of the West in the Anglican Church of Mexico, will observe the 21st Sunday after Pentecost, November 3, by celebrating the Holy Eucharist at 11 a.m. in La Huerta Events Center. Rev. Jim Powers will celebrate and Jerry Stiles will give a message with the theme, “Saints and Souls”.
Coffee is available before the service and coffee and refreshments are served after the service.
Sunday School (in Spanish) convenes during the service at the Gospel Reading. Young people are welcome to share this time of lessons and discovery.

This Sunday, Dr. Wayne Cook and Pastor Carolyn Hansen again share the pulpit, to continue their sermon series on Growth of Discipleship. Discipleship is not only about what Christians believe, but also about what Jesus wants them to do: to follow His example, obey His commands, and believe in the salvation He brings, growing in grace and knowledge.

St. Andrew’s Anglican
Sunday, November 3, the Reverend Jim Priddy will preside and preach at St. Andrew’s service of Holy Eucharist, 10 a.m. Coffee hour, a time of fellowship and welcome, follows the service.
St. Andrew’s annual Harvest Comida – a joint celebration of the Canadian and the U.S. Thanksgivings – is Monday, November 4. Social hour at 1 p.m., dinner at 2 p.m., catered by Pedro of Go Bistro. Parishioners are asked to make pies or crumble desserts. Tickets are 250 pesos. Invite your frients and neighbors to enjoy this bountiful feast.
Operation Feed welcomes donations of non-perishable food items every Sunday. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to rice, beans, pasta, lentils, garbanzos, oats, oil and salt. The parish distributes the donations to Lakeside’s neediest families.
Decluttering? If so, don’t forget Todo Bueno. Donations or consignments benefit St. Andrew’s Outreach Ministry. Everything from clothing, kitchenware, electronics, books, furniture, appliances, collectibles to sports equipment are welcomed.

How comforting it is to know that wherever we go, God is there with us. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations and wonder if God is paying attention. We may feel so alone and even depressed. We can’t feel God’s presence, and we need His guidance and help. We don’t have to feel all alone. God is with us. “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” He is working out our problems, and we don’t even realize it. We need only to have faith in His word and He is with us always.

Sometimes we may hear, “They have no right to do that!” This statement needs a little clarification. The declaration might really mean authority instead of right. Authority gives right its power. Even law enforcement, who are an authority in themselves ,are only so because they operate by regulation of a higher authority. All humans must understand what is their authority in life to guide or even limit their decisions.
These principles are no less true in the life of every Christian. Someone may say about truth that they may believe one idea is true, but they don’t believe the totality is acceptable. The question then must arise, “Well, what is your personal authority in life?” If they say “self,” then it is limited along with the body which perishes. That is why, for the believer, God’s Word is our supreme authority. Why? Because it is eternal, revealed by our one, true living God. He hasn’t given us authority only to supersede it with anything else. Pastors Paul and Susana Allen urge us all to stick with Truth Himself, the One who loves us most.

Have you seen God? Some think that seeing God is impossible arguing that He is invisible. You have a misunderstanding of who God is if you think you could never see Him. God wants us to see Him.
