Every Sunday, Operation Feed, a program supported by St. Andrew’s, welcomes donations of non-perishable food items. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to rice, beans, pasta, lentils, garbanzos, oats, oil and salt. The parish distributes these foodstuffs to the Lakeside’s neediest families.
Decluttering? If so, don’t forget Todo Bueno. Donations or consignments benefit St. Andrew’s Outreach Ministry. Everything from clothing, kitchenware, electronics, books, furniture, appliances, collectibles to sports equipment are welcomed.

Lake Chapala Baptist

At Christmas in 1914, during World War I, soldiers on both sides put down their guns and sang carols, shook hands, and buried their dead. At Christmas in 1918, the United States tried to send food to the starving people in Germany but were prohibited by the anger and pain that the Europeans felt thus causing thousands to starve. If the 1914 Christmas story reminds us about the importance of choosing to see past our momentary hatreds, the 1918 story reminds us how hard that can be, especially when it requires forgiveness. Of all the virtues, forgiveness is one of the most beautiful to receive and the most difficult to offer. In this fractured world of ours, forgiveness is one of our most important Christ-like virtues.

Christ Church
Christ Church Lakeside, a parish of the Diocese of the West in the Anglican Church of Mexico, will observe the First Sunday after Christmas Day on January 5, 11 a.m. in La Huerta Events Center. Rev. Linda Ramos will celebrate and give a message with the theme “Precious Gifts,” based on Matthew 2:1-12.
Sunday School (in Spanish) convenes during the service at the Gospel Reading. Young people are welcome to share this time of lessons and discovery.

Tuesday, January 7, about 1:15 p.m., there will be a GAM Food Distribution at the last soccer field on Calle Revolucion (the street where Ajijic’s Wednesday market is held). Help is always needed to fill the buckets with food.
The Bible Study meets on Thursday, January 9, 3 p.m. at Elizabeth Carroll’s home, Galeana 35 in Ajijic. All are welcome to learn about the inspired contents of the Bible and share their insights with each other.

Doug Matton will speak on “Why Five Genders are Better than Two” Sunday, January 5, at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (LCUUF).
Matton will take a look at several ancient multi-gender cultures to see what they can teach us about acceptance of each others’ differences. Perhaps lessons we could use to live peacefully in an increasingly mean-spirited world.
After the service, we will have a discussion about LCUUF’s proposed 2020-2021 budget.

If you’re reading this, it means you’ve made it into the new year. Congratulations! Now you have the task/privilege/responsibility/joy of living in 2020. What will this year be like for you? I know, I know, you don’t have your crystal ball handy, but I’m sure you have things planned and they might come to pass. Then again, they might not. James in the New Testament gave advice to his readers:
“Look here, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.’ How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog – it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, ‘If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.’ Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.” (James 4:13-16).
The fog might blow away at any moment, life here on earth will end; then what? Are there answers to that question? I believe there are, that’s why I’m a follower of Jesus. How about you?

The word “hope” is popularly used for many reasons. We hope the New Year will be a good one. Even cities and capes are given this name. Often daughters are given this name, sometimes wishing this would be miraculous concerning a certain issue. It is nonetheless a pleasant name to have.
These are temporal examples for the implementation of the word. Nevertheless, it carries a much deeper connotation than mere worldly examples. What about those who are in some kind of desperation and need hope? How about those who are unsure about their future, now or eternally? In I Corinthians 15 (ampc) we find, “If we who are [abiding] in Christ have hope only in this life and that is all, then we are of all people most miserable and to be pitied.”
