Ajijic softball opens season early; players needed

With the pleasant weather, Lake Chapala Softball threw out the season’s first pitch nearly two months early this year.

With snowbirds still away, there is room for new male and female players to join now.

Softball is already a socially distanced game, with players in natural positions seldom coming within six feet of others.

Games are played in Ajijic at the lower soccer field (blue doors) on Calle Revolucion, site of the Wednesday market, every Monday morning at 10 a.m. until spring (weather permitting). Thursday games will be added early in the season, for two games per week, but presently all games are only Mondays. The play is informal in style, with sides chosen-up just prior to each game. Because of that, and unlike a formal league, it is not a problem if players must miss some of the games.

Lake Chapala Softball is slow-pitch played on grass, with local senior softball rules specially designed to help players avoid injury. The group provides the bats, and there are also a few gloves available for loan. Cost is 40 pesos per game. Skill is nice but not a requirement.

To join or to get more information, show up around 9 to 9:30 a.m. on Mondays (weather permitting) to the field at the end of Calle Revolucion’s first block toward the lake from the Carretera, and walk through the door in the blue fence.
