Jalisco criminal justice authorities report that a man identified as Reyes M. has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after he was found guilty for the 2018 death of his female lover in Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos.
According to the case file, the murder occurred on a property located in the Los Laureles neighborhood of the municipality. It was there that the killer summoned his victim for a secret encounter. Enraged when she told him she had decided to end the relationship, he beat and strangled her to death. He then threw her naked body 150 meters away from the crime scene, where it was later found.
Based on investigations, authorities provided sufficient evidence to gain a conviction for the crime of femicide. In addition to his lengthy prison sentence, the murderer has been ordered to pay a sum to the victim’s family for reparation of damages.
Femicide is often used as a way of describing the epidemic of women killed by men in intimate settings, but broader definitions include the intentional murder of women because they are women.
