Sunday, December 10, Pastor Wayne will talk about “The effects of the light” when Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
The sun stands as an indicator of God’s immense power. It is so big, over a million Earths could fit inside. Within its fiery depths, a nuclear furnace churns endlessly, producing the energy that sustains life on Earth. The leaves of our plants are fed by its rays. Scientists are now seeking to replicate its fusion reaction on earth.
Yet an even greater light is found in another Son...the very Son of God...Jesus the Christ. He, the true Light of the World, outshines even the sun’s brilliance, illuminating not just our physical world but the depths of our souls. Jesus makes the astounding claim that he is the light of the world. It is a claim of both hope and judgement. This week we will examine the effects of that statement.

History shows us that Holy Scripture is at the center of every great move of God, either setting up the move of God or restoring the word of God. B.B. Warfield said that when the Bible speaks, God speaks. A Scripture-based, Spirit-led hearing brought about an awakening in Jerusalem in the days of Nehemiah. Nehemiah 8:9b says: “For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law.”
Holy Scripture teaches us that only through Jesus Christ, sacrificed at Calvary’s cross, are we delivered from the justice due unto our sins. This is all an act of God’s grace. However, until such conviction and repentance occurs, Scripture is ever so clear over mankind’s state: “... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23). When David realized that His sin with Bathsheba had offended a holy God, he lamented, “My sin is ever before me.” But just as for David and Jerusalem there is hope for us all.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16)
This is one of the most well-known and beloved verses in the Bible. We cannot earn this gift and we are not worthy of it. Nothing we say or do makes it possible. Our good works are not sufficient. This is God’s gift of grace to those who believe. What a magnificent gift. But God goes further in the next verse which is less well known. “For God did not send His son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:17). Several years ago, there was a group that said, “WWJD?”. What would Jesus do? There are many people in this world that we consider “the others.” They may be a different race, religion, socioeconomic background or have different beliefs or opinions. If we are to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, we must not condemn those who are different from us but must reach out a hand to help them. Indeed, What would Jesus do?

Mother Teressa reminds us, “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” Simple words open deeper reflections for more thoughtful kindness. It’s not what we do for holiday spirit, but more importantly how we do it.
This Sunday we’ll hear a true story of how playing Santa for needy children was turned upside down in Lafayette, Indiana. For 40 years, it’s changed the way churches help families at Christmas time.
As the Dali Lama points out, “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others, And if you can’t help, at least don’t hurt them.” Actions matter and especially at this time of year, wrap giving in in compassion, dedicated to lifting up others and respecting their inherent worth and dignity.
