The Lakeside community responded with overwhelming enthusiasm to the May 27 Open House introducing the Lakeside Memory Neighborhood Montessori Pilot Project for People Living with Dementia, presented in collaboration with Casa Sonya Elder Care.
With a full house of attendees, co-founders Elly Contreras and Joan Fletcher outlined the Montessori-inspired day program, designed to help individuals living with memory loss remain engaged, independent, respected, and connected to their community.
Committee member Dr. Alex Hernandez shared plans for the Lakeside Memory Neighborhood, including innovative therapies such as Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), speech therapy, and other supportive services. All programs will be available to both the expatriate and Mexican communities.
The event also introduced Magical Music Wednesdays, a weekly gathering featuring live music, social connection, and respite support for caregivers.
Following a delicious taquiza lunch and lively musical entertainment, guests experienced the Montessori approach in action. Interest has been very strong; more than 30 volunteers have already signed up to support the initiative.
While fundraising continues for the future Lakeside Memory Neighborhood, the pilot program responds to a clearly expressed community need. Plans include expanding activities to crafts, exercise and brain-stimulating programs.
