For self-examination is the lamp of wisdom, but self-condemnation is a burden Christ did not give. The believer looks within only long enough to look again to God, who knows the heart better than the heart knows itself, and whose judgment is always righteous, true, and full of grace.

Rev. Matt Alspaugh will present “A Hope for Peace” Sunday, June 28, at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
This recent statement by political strategist Hiba Qasas gave our presenter pause: “We are living in one of the least peaceful moments in modern history. We have the largest number of conflicts since World War II.” We live in a time when war has become the default choice for solving disagreements among nations, a reflex rather than a last resort. How might we find better, well, more peaceable solutions to our disagreements? How might we achieve lasting peace?
Dee Dee Camhi will be the service associate. Wiley Beveridge will provide the music.

Common Ground Fellowship / Little Chapel by the Lake
As humans, we have two different types of freedom: “freedom from,” and “freedom to.” “Freedom from,” for example, would mean acts like emancipation, liberation, or deliverance. An example would be a prisoner set free from incarceration. However, does that mean that a liberated person can do whatever he desires? As regards “freedom to,” depending on the laws of the country in which one resides, one can enjoy many liberties, and yet, this “freedom to” can sometimes lead the practitioner into a new and severe bondage. Join us this Sunday as Dr. Ted Rogers explores how the two freedoms must work together to bring about true liberation.
CGFLC is a bilingual, friendly, and all-inclusive place to worship our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We believe the church exists primarily for the benefit of those outside it as we seek to make Christ’s love known to others by serving our community in a feeding ministry and various other forms of aid. Additionally, we gladly accept donations of clothing and non-perishable food items that go directly to families in need in our purple donation box in front of the Chapel. Among our missions, we also host Saturday’s car wash fundraiser for Mama Cleo’s Boys’ Home, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and, lastly, we have a Saturday outreach to the poorer kids in Chapala.
Our main worship service at 11 a.m. includes a children’s church. You can also join us at 9:30 for prayer and singing before the service. Belva Velazquez teaches a Bible Study on learning scripture more deeply. Wednesdays, 5 p.m.

Sunday, June 28, at 10 a.m., we begin a new sermon series: The Parables of Jesus: What Is the Kingdom of God Like? We often think of Jesus’ parables as simple stories with easy lessons.
But if we read them carefully, many of them are puzzling, provocative, and even a little unsettling.
In our first sermon, “Why Did Jesus Teach This Way?”, we’ll look at Mark 4 and consider how parables reveal the mystery of God’s Kingdom — a Kingdom that turns our expectations upside down. The stories may be familiar. But Jesus still has plenty to surprise us.
English-language service is at 10 a.m. at Constitución 26, in Ajijic, 2nd floor. Enter through the back garage area and walk upstairs. For those with limited mobility, there’s also a small elevator at the front. Join us for coffee and refreshments after the service.
