Canadians

Aurelio Lopez Rocha, Jalisco’s secretary of Tourism, will be the speaker at the Canadian Club of Lake Chapala meeting on Monday, November 7 at Hotel La Nueva Posada (Donato Guerra 8, Ajijic).

Lopez Rocha will talk about the many attractive new travel destinations that can be enjoyed within the state.

Apart from his current position, Lopez is a successful entrepreneur and chairman of the board of the Guadalajara World Trade Center, where the Canadian Consulate is located, and president of the Mexican Confederation of World Trade Centers. He is also an active promoter and participant in projects such as the Guadalajara Cultural Capital and the Guggenheim Museum in Mexico.

Also speaking will be local business leader and activist Aurora Michel, who will talk about fish farming projects coming to Lake Chapala.

The social hour begins at 3 p.m. and the programs start at 4 p.m. Yearly club membership fees are 180 pesos per person. The fee includes four 25-peso drink tickets for beer, wine or soft drinks. Guests are welcome and pay 50 pesos each. Drink tickets for beer, wine or soft drinks cost 25 pesos each.

Remembrance Day

The 904 Wing of the Air Force Association of Canada will sponsor a Remembrance Day Service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church on Friday, November 11, 10:30 a.m.

The service will commemorate the sacrifice made by more than 115,000 members of the Canadian forces, who have died outside of Canada in the service of their country in both world wars and in dozens of NATO, United Nations and multinational conflicts and operations.

The Reverend Winston Welty, rector of St, Andrew’s Anglican Church will be the celebrant. All are welcome.

Shots

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) is having an “Immunization Make-up Day.”

Because of the rain and the Pan American Games torch relay, many folks were not able to make it to the LCS Health Fair. Immunizations for influenza and pneumonia will be available on Wednesday, November 9, 10 a.m. to noon. Flu shots cost 300 pesos and pneumonia shots 400 pesos. Sign up at the LCS office. Pay on the day of service. The public is invited to take advantage of this service.

Tea Party

The Lakeside Tea Party will meet Tuesday, November 8, 4 p.m. at Sunrise Café in Riberas del Pilar. The topic will be “The Rise of Islam in the United States and Around the World.”

Ajijic resident Judy Corts, who lived for more than 20 years in Saudi Arabia and Iran will discuss the impact of this “unprecedented” growth and the effects of Sharia Law. All are welcome. For more information contact Karen Cage at 766-5047.

Red Cross trips

The next Cruz Roja bus trip will be to the upscale Andares Mall in Guadalajara on Tuesday, November 15.

Three weeks later, on Tuesday, December 6, the trip will head to to Galerias Mall for Christmas shopping. The mall features Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco and Mega, as well as many good restaurants. Each trip costs 200 pesos and tickets may be purchased at the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. For additional information contact June Cooper at 766-4939.

Veteran’s Day

American Legion Post Seven in Chapala (Morelos 114) will hold a Veterans Day service on Friday, November 11, 11 a.m. The ceremony will be followed by cocktails at 1 p.m. and the traditional “pig roast” meal with baked beans, corn on the cob and bananas Foster served at 2 p.m.

End polio

A gourmet dinner at Roberto’s Restaurant on Friday, November 18, 6-9 p.m. will raise funds for the Rotary International’s “Stop Polio Now” campaign.

The dinner is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ajijic, Roberto’s Restaurant and Lakeside Medical College.

Entertainment will be provided by Daniel Cordero. The cost of the dinner is 250 pesos and tickets are available at Diane Pearl’s Colecciones, Dr. J. Manuel Cordova’s office, Roberto’s Restaurant and Dr. Gerardo Leon’s office.

Jaltepec Christmas

The much anticipated annual Christmas event at Jaltepec Centro Educativo Hospitality University has been set for Tuesday, December 6, 8 p.m. and Wednesday December 7, 2 p.m.

The menu for December 6 is Waldorf blueberry salad, roast turkey with sausage stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce, potatoes and seasonal vegetables with chocolate cake with cream cheese for dessert and tea or coffee (complimentary hors d’ouevres).

Both the luncheon and the dinner events will feature “A Taste of Los Cantantes del Lago” under the musical direction of Timothy G. Ruff Welch.

Your attendance will help the needier students of the technical school in hotel and hospitality management. Supporting the students does make a difference, not only for the young women themselves but also to their families, as their economic standards are raised. St. Andrew’s Anglican

Excluded from Heaven because I didn’t plan well enough? What kind of God would do that? Is there really a time in God’s eyes when our time has run out. This week’s sermon at St. Andrew’s by Father Winston Welby will be “Is it ever too late?”

This week St. Andrew’s returns to its Fall-Winter Sunday schedule with worship services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with a time of welcome, fellowship and refreshments between the two services. That “in between” time this week will also be the occasion for a ‘Ministry Fair” showcase for the many ministries carried out in the name of St. Andrew’s. The church is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just one block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Requiem

St. Andrew’s will hold a Requiem Eucharist service in memory of Father Lou Catching on Saturday, November 12, 11 a.m. Catching was a pastor of St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Guadalajara and a valued member of St. Andrew’s faith community for many years. The service will be followed by interment in the Garden Columbarium. Father Lou’s many friends and acquaintances are invited to the ceremonies.

Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will meet Sunday, November 6, 10 a.m. on the ground level of Manix Restaurant (Ocampo 57, Ajijic) to celebrate the Holy Eucharist. They will be celebrating All Saints Day and the Commemoration of All Faithful Departed. The sermon topic by Father Danny Borkowski will be “What is the Christian Hope?” based on John 5: 24-27.

Presbyterians

Pastor Ross Arnold’s sermon series continues on Sunday, November 6 with “Real People: The Trials of Job” from Job 1: 6-22. The Men’s Breakfast is set for Tuesday, November 8, 9 a.m. at Sunrise Restaurant. There will be no Bible study or choir practice on Friday, November 11.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. The service on November 6 entitled “That’s Great?”, a reflection on celebrity, scandal and greatness is presented by Mardele Harland. A coffee social follows the service.
