Score for Jackson

The Score Sports Bar will host a fundraiser for Ajijic jeweler Daniel Jackson Garcia and his 17-year-old nephew on Thursday, March 1, 3-7 p.m., to raise funds to offset medical and equipment expenses incurred during a recent devastating gas explosion.

Jackson hopes to be back at work next month, but his nephew is undergoing painful skin grafts.

The fundraiser is organized by Jackson’s friends and will include a 50/50 draw, raffle and silent auction. Prizes include free accommodation at an Ajijic B&B, golf lessons and a host of other goods, including photographs by Ajijic photographers Xill Fessenden and Rebecca Ford.

The Score will offer pizza by the slice, along with several drink specials. A donation box will be out for contributions. The Score is located on the lake side of the Carretera, adjacent to Strom White Movers and across the road from Robert’s Restaurant.

The two youngest members of the 40-piece Orquesta Tipica de Chapala did themselves proud performing with the older members of the orchestra for the Fiesta Latina on February 4,

Seminar

The seminar is open to all LCS members.

“Modern Mexico: So Much More than We Think” is a free 90-minute PowerPoint lecture by Dr. Richard Rhoda that is scheduled Tuesday, February 21, 2 p.m. in the LCS Sala.

This is a repeat of Rhoda’s December 15 presentation. It will cover a range of topics such as drug wars, climate change, volcanoes, immigration, biodiversity, health issues, political trends, ethnic groups and monopolies. Programa Pro Niños Incapacitados del Lago will host “Hollywood on the Lake” – a glamour-filled dinner-dance –  on Thursday, March 15 at Hotel Real de Chapala. Show up dressed as your favorite Hollywood star, director, cinematographer or extra – just be there. You’ll get to walk the red carpet with Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable and who knows who else.

Tickets cost 450 pesos per person and will be on sale at the LCS Tickets, Etc. booth from February 20 to March 13 (Monday through Friday) from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each table seats 10 people, but you can be seated with your smaller group at an “open” table, as well.

Those who want the royal “rat pack” treatment can reserve a table for ten for 7,500 pesos. You’ll get free Siete Leguas Tequila, three bottles of Reserva wine, your photo taken with Marilyn or Gable, chocolates, coffee and liqueurs and other premium items.  Tickets are available only in advance.

Sterilization

The next big pet sterilization program is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 2, 3 and 4. It will be held at Casa Epical on the town plaza of Santa Cruz, about four kilometers east of Chapala. Veterinarians from Mexico City will be operating with the assistance of students from Guadalajara and local volunteers. The operations are free so that needy families who can’t afford to have their pets sterilized will be able to do so. Sterilization is the kindest way to assure that fewer puppies and kittens need to be given away or just dumped.

Those who would like to volunteer to help with this project, whether it’s in the operating room, or to transport sleepy animals back home, to donate items that the clinic will need or money for the veterinarians’ plane flights, contact Lucille Van Straaten at (376) 765-7681.

Bazaar

Lakeside Presbyterian Church is still requesting donations for their upcoming Bazaar on Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3. Donations can be dropped off at the church any time it is open or from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Wednesday until February 22. Those who need pick-up should call Betty Prentki at 766-4292.
