For dinner

Everyone is invited to a fundraising dinner at the Jaltepec Centro Educativo Hospitality University for the benefit of the young ladies studying there.

The event takes place on Tuesday, March 20, with the no-host bar opening at 6 p.m. with complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Pianist Timothy Welch will be on hand, providing the cocktail music.

The menu begins with mixed salad and a main course choice of Chicken Cordon Bleu or fish filet with pesto sauce. Dessert will be luscious crepes with cream cheese and blackberries. The meal comes with tea or coffee – all for just 350 pesos per person.

Your attendance will help the needier students of school. Graduates from this technical university are usually guaranteed well-paying positions. They, in turn, often help their younger siblings with their education. Besides, the dinner prepared by the students will be great!

Farewell Party

Florence Michaloski (left) is feted at a farewell party with 20 of her closest friends and neighbors. Michaloski, who has contributed much to the local community over the years, is leaving the area after a quarter of a century of residence.

General meeting

Niños Incapacitados del Lago holds its annual general meeting on Thursday, March 8 at Hotel Real de Chapala, starting at 10:30 a.m.

Besides introducing one of the children in the program, and brief reports from the president, treasurer and clinic coordinator, the organization will be holding an election of officers and approving proposed amendments to the bylaws. Everyone is welcome.

Bus trips

Cruz Roja (Red Cross ) bus trips to Guadalajara lined up next month head to Galerias Mall on Tuesday, March 6; Tonala/Tlaquepaque on Wednesday, March 14 and Andares Mall on Wednesday, March 28.

For prices and time schedules, stop at the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society, Monday o Friday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Rib fest

The Lake Chapala Shrine Club holds its Sixth Annual Rib Fest on Wednesday, February 29,  2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Villa Encantada. The ribs will be prepared by Tony, there will be music for dancing all afternoon and two bars. Take advantage of the free bus service from parking in East Riberas and the Monte Carlo Hotel.

Funds generated by the Rib Fest support the Shrine Club’s activities that include helping Lakeside children with medical needs. The Lake Chapala Shrine Club has assisted nearly 500 children at a cost of about 1.2 million pesos in the past six years. Ninety-nine kids were helped at a cost of 221,232 pesos in 2011.

The community’s support of the Lake Chapala Shrine Club is always greatly appreciated by the Shriners and, more importantly, by Lakeside children who need medical help.

Jewish congregation

The Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation will celebrate with their annual Purim Party on Wednesday, March 7, 3 p.m. at the synagogue. This festive Jewish holiday is filled with fun, a wonderful Purim Shpiel (play) based on Beatles music, and, of course, great food. The home made hamentaschen are always a treat. There will also be a salmon entrée and diners’ first glass of wine. Please take a parve or dairy side dish to share. Soft drinks, coffee and tea are included and there will be a cash bar. The price is 50 pesos for members and 80 pesos for non-members.

Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Fellowship will observe the First Sunday in Lent on February 26 with a celebration of Holy Eucharist, Rite I at 10 a.m. on the ground floor of Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. Father Danny Borkowski’s sermon topic will be “Wild Beasts” based on Mark 1: 9-15.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday, 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. Fred Harland will be the speaker on Sunday, February 26. The title of the talk is “Doing the Right Thing,” going with the fellowship’s topic of “Ethics” that was chosen for 2012. The introductory presentation provides a framework for deciding what the right thing to do is. A luncheon get-together will follow. Presbyterians

Pastor Ross Arnold’s sermon for Sunday, February 26, the first in his Lenten series, is “The Humanity of Christ” using Hebrews 2: 14-18 as the text. There will be no Bible study on Friday, March 2.

Lakeside Presbyterians’ bazaar will be held March 2 and 3, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be a great place to pick up clothing, decorative items, electronics, jewelry, books and more. It’s a lot of fun, eco-friendly and 100 percent of the proceeds go to various Lakeside charities.

The church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just west of S&S auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

The first Sunday in Lent is inaugurated at St. Andrew’s with the traditional chanting of the Great Litany in procession to begin both the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. Father Winston Weltey’s sermon “Remember Not … Remember Me” is a reflection on a provocative, plaintive verse in Psalm 25. A time of refreshment and fellowship falls between the two services and all are welcome to join in at Calle San Lucas 19 in Riberas del Pilar.

Tuesday, February 28, Father Winston begins a six-week Lenten Bible study focusing on the Gospel of St. Mark, with each session beginning at 11 a.m. and ending a noon. The title this week is “The Beginning of the Gospel” and covers march 1: 1-15. Participants are encouraged to bring a Bible. A call to the church office at 765-3926 will help guarantee that sufficient materials will be available.

The Women’s Lunch is set for February 29 at Ajijic Tango at 12:30 p.m. All are welcome to join in, but do call the church to reserve your space.
