Brits meet

There’s been a change to the next meeting of the British Society scheduled for Saturday, March 3, beginning at 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant (Ocampo 57, Ajijic).

The guest speaker at the meeting will be British Ambassador to Mexico Judith Macgregor, who is visiting Guadalajara for the film festival. Red Cross

Though folks dressed like this collecting money at busy intersections may be on the up and up, they are not collecting for the Cruz Roja (Red Cross). Red Cross volunteers have been frustrated lately by would-be Red Cross contributors believing that when they gave these folks money they were donating to the Red Cross.

Upscale farewell

Upscale Resale Bazaar in Riberas del Pilar is holding a farewell party for volunteer Barbara Whillden, who is leaving Mexico and returning to her home in Australia.

Whillden taught English in Ecuador and Guadalajara and finally settled in Ajijic. She borrowed a sewing machine and made more than 100 quilts for children and adults, numerous walker bags, infant blankets and, more recently Kindle covers and eye glass cases. These have all been sold at Upscale Resale to support two children’s homes, Hope House and La Ola.

Whillden’s many friends are invited to share their farewells at Upscale Resale in Riberas del Pilar (near Clinica Maskaras) on Tuesday, March 6, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Democrats

The next general meeting of the Lake Chapala Chapter of Democrats Abroad will be held Monday, March 12, 4 p.m. at La Nueva Posada (Donato Guerra 9, Ajijic). The main topic of conversation will be how to re-register to vote. Remember: voting from abroad now requires re-registration for each election.

The movie

The movie “Warm Springs” is back by popular demand – this time on Sunday, March 18, 3 p.m. at the home of Suzanne Forrest (Javier Mina 28, Ajijic).

The award-winning film covers the struggle of Franklin Delano Roosevelt to overcome crippling polio contracted during the epidemic in the late 1920s. The health resort in the state of Georgia  still treats people of all ages who suffer from crippling diseases.

The bus

Volunteers of Cruz Roja (Red Cross) Chapala are sponsoring three bus trips to metro-area Guadalajara for great shopping in the month of March.

They head to Galerias Mall on Tuesday, March 6; Tonala/Tlaquepaque on Wednesday, March 14 and Andares Mall on Wednesday, March 28. For ticket prices, ticket sales and other information, visit the Red Cross table at the Lake Chapala Society Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon.

General meeting

Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic (NCA) is reminding the board members, scholarship sponsors and others that the annual general meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 8 at Hotel La Nueva Posada. Registration will be at 9:30 a.m. with the meeting set to begin at 10 a.m.

The board of directors will present information from the past year and projections for the upcoming year. Ideas and comments will be welcome. NCA is looking to increase the number of people on the board for the next year. Everyone is welcome.

Purim

The Lake Chapala Jewish Community’s Annual Purim Party is scheduled for Wednesday, March 7, 3 p.m. at the synagogue (Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar). The Purim shpiel (play) based on Beatles music is sure to entertain you and the main dish for the meal is salmon. Please take a side dish to share. There will be an open bar. The cost to members is 50 pesos and to non-members, 80 pesos, which includes the entrée and the first glass of wine.

Presbyterians

Pastor Ross Arnold’s sermon at Lake Chapala Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 4 will be “The Body of Christ,” from 1 Corinthians 12. Worship begins at 10 a.m.

Friday, March 9, 10 a.m. the Bible study led by Pastor Arnold continues in the Book of Acts.

The church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

St. Andrews Anglican

“Get behind Me.”  Is Jesus’ sharp response to St. Peter a Lenten rebuke or a Lenten challenge? That’s the theme for the sermon by Father Winston Welty at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church on Sunday, March 4. Worship services are at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with a fellowship hour, to which members and visitors are invited, between the services.

Tuesday, March 6, 11 a.m. will see the second of Father Welty’s studies in the Gospel of Mark. Entitled “The Three-Fold Ministry,” the study will cover Mark 1: 16 to 3: 5. Bring a Bible and an inquiring mind. You’ll have an interesting time.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday, 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. The program for March 4 will be titled “Stories of Stewardship,” when Jan Steinbright, Helen White, Mary Helen Montgomery, Janice Kimball and Bonnie Phillips will share personal stories of how they have cared for the land in different ways. Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will observe the Second Sunday in Lent on March 4 with a celebration of Holy Eucharist Rite II at 10 a.m. on the ground floor of Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. The sermon topic will be “Things of God and Things of Men,” based on Mark 8:31 -38.

Jewish Congregation

The Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation will hold its annual general meeting on Tuesday, March 20, 2 p.m. The current board will be introduced and there will be an interim president’s report, along with reports from committees and the election of a new board of directors. They will meet at the synagogue, Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar.
