Bus trips

The next bus trips to benefit Cruz Roja (Red Cross) Chapala are to Tonala/Tlaquepaque on Wednesday, April 25 and to Guadalajara’s Galerias Mall on Thursday, May 3. The round trips cost 200 pesos per person. Tickets can be purchased at the Cruz Roja table at the Lake Chapala Society, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pet food

With the cooperation and help from Geoffrey Kaye of the Animal Shelter, several members of Animal Buddies will hold a pet food drive on Thursday, April 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in front of the Animal Shelter pet food store in Riberas del Pilar.

Your purchases will help the shelter’s animals, Anita’s Animals or your choice of another rescue group.

If you can’t make it to the food drive on Thursday, you can purchase dog or cat food anytime and designate where you want the food to go. The Animal Shelter will hold your donation for pick-up. After you’ve made the purchase, please let your designated rescue group know that there is a paid food purchase waiting at the shelter for them.

The food drive is held on the third Thursday of each month. Please help Animal Buddies help the Lakeside area’s less fortunate animals.

Plat dates

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) is offering monthly game days free for its membership.

Non-members will also be able to sign up and play for a fee of 20 pesos per day. So whatever your leisure interests (limited to those appropriate to be played in public) you’re sure to find something you like.

Show on Saturday, April 21, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and choose between Texas Hold ‘Em, Mexican Train, Scrabble, Rummy Q, Hand & Foot, or darts. Additional games, including Blackjack, will be added if enough folks are interested.

Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play the games – volunteers will be on hand to show you how. This is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon, learning new games and making new friends.

A no-host bar will be open, offering Bloody Marys, beer and wine. The LCS grounds will be open as usual, including all the regular Saturday programs and services, including the El Patio coffee and snack bar.

Other play dates are May 19, June 23 and August 18 (no game day in July). For more information check at the LCS information desk in the office or contact Patricia Doran at 766-0794.

Navy League

The next meeting of the Navy League Lake Chapala Council will be on Saturday, April 21, at Manix Restaurant (Ocampo 57, Ajijic). The lunch/meeting starts at 1 p.m. Brief administrative remarks will precede lunch.

The speaker will be Commander Bill Wheat,  the former leader of the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Team, the Blue Angels, from 1967 to 1969.

He flew the F-11F Tiger in the Blue Angels and transitioned the team from the F-11 to the F-4J Phantom II. Wheat will show and augment the narration of the DVD “The Magic of Flight’ that includes a section on Blue Angel training, as well as aircraft carrier operations.

Efforts to rebuild the Navy League Council continue. All are welcome to make suggestions or recommendations. Send them to Denny Strole at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

To become a member of the Navy League you do not need prior military service. The only requirement is a desire to support the Sea Services (Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine). The Council is open to all, regardless of nationality. Membership information is available at the meeting. Those who plan to attend the April 21 meeting should call 766-0485 or email Strole before April 18.

Therapy horses

Pasos Milagrosos will be the beneficiary of the second annual yard sale at the Chapala Country Club in Vista del Lago on Sunday, April 22, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The place will be filled with all kinds of treasures: furniture and stuff for your home, high-end clothing, food to feed your sweet tooth and more.

Pasos Milagrosos are the folks who help children with disabilities make recovery by bringing them close to horses. The kids love it and the therapy is a proven anecdote for many things, including cerebral palsy, depression and other maladies.

If you have donations for the sale or wish to sell some of your unwanted goods, contact Sally Gurll at (376) 763-5496, Elena Cooper @ 763-5763 or Marilyn Edwards @ 763-5037.

Addictive behavior

Sex Addicts Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experiences, strength and hope for the purpose of finding freedom from addictive sexual behavior and helping others recover from sex addiction.

Organizers say the meetings offer an “accepting, non-threatening environment to share our common struggles and learn how to apply the principles of the Twelve Steps to our everyday lives ... the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop addictive sexual behavior.”

The group stresses that it practices “strict anonymity and confidentiality.”

There are no fees or dues.

Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter (Low Sunday) on April 15, 10 a.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. Holy Communion will be from the Reserved Sacrament. The sermon topic is “The Giving of the Holy Spirit and Doubting Thomas,” based on John 20:29-31. The celebrant and preacher will be Warden Jim Powers, authorized to lead such services by Lino Rodriguez Amaro, bishop of the Diocese of the West in the Anglican Church of Mexico.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

“Doubting” Thomas always shows up on the Sunday after Easter, so faith is the unavoidable emphasis of worship on that day – blind faith, informed faith, trusting faith, shallow faith – and what about mustard seed faith? Whatever faith we bring to our spiritual journeys, this is the Sunday to bring it to church at St. Andrew’s.

St. Andrew’s is now back on its seasonal schedule of only one Sunday service at 10 a.m. each week, followed by refreshment, welcome and fellowship in the garden.

St. Andrew’s will hold a scrumptious “post Easter” ham supper on Friday, April 20, starting with a social hour at 4 p.m. As always, this is a meal for the congregation and the community. St. Andrew’s is encouraging everyone to show up with friends and neighbors. Tickets are 175 pesos per person. Sign up the Sunday service or in the church office any weekday morning.

St. Andrew’s is located at San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar. The telephone number is 765-3926.
