Laguna Chapalac - May 12, 2012

Run

The Terranova Institute is inviting everyone at Lakeside to run in the fourth edition of the “Corre por ayudar” (Run to help) event on Sunday, June 10.

Runners will pay 50 pesos plus a bag of imperishable groceries (beans, rice, corn flakes or pasta, for example). Proceeds from the race will go to Cruz Roja Chapala and Villa Infantil Nuestra Señora Guadalupe y San Jose in San Pedro Tesistan.

The route goes from Tobolandia to the Terranova Institute in Rancho del Oro. Advanced runners may want to run with the professionals from the Chapala Malecon to Rancho del Oro.

Register at the Terranova Institute, Galeria Di Paola or just show up at Tobolandia on June 10 before the race starts at 8 a.m.

Last year nearly 200 people participated. Let’s see if that number can go up this year. You’ll get your exercise and help a couple of great causes.

Moving

The Tuesday morning Farmers’ Market is moving from its spot at the Laguna shopping center to new digs at La Huerta Events Center, effective immediately.

The new venue on the west end of Ajijic should lend itself well as a marketplace. There’s plenty of parking and there will be tables and chairs set around to use for coffee and goodies.

The next market day is set for Tuesday, May 15, 10 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. with more than 40 vendors present. Don’t miss the new look!

Cats and dogs

The monthly Pet Food Drive will be held on Thursday, May 17, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event is held with the cooperation of Geoffrey Kaye of the Animal Shelter and several members of Animal Buddies.

It’s a great opportunity to help out the folks who work so hard to care for needy animals. You can make your purchase for any of the animal rescue organizations here and the food will be distributed accordingly. Kitten and puppy season is already underway, so a donation of kitten or puppy food would be greatly appreciated.

If you can’t make it to the May 17 food drive, you can make a purchase of dog or cat food at any time at the Animal Shelter and designate where you’d like the food to go. The shelter will hold your donation purchase for pick up – just let the rescue group involved know that they have a donation waiting.

New hours

The charity Upscale Resale shop near Maskaras Clinic will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Monday through Saturday. It will continue to take consignments on Mondays and Wednesdays but will gratefully receive donations any time. The regular 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours will resume in July.

All the shop’s profits continue to help fund La Ola, a home for girls (except for one little brother) and Hope House, with boys aged from nine to 18 years old. Hope House is currently embarking on a new project: aquaculture, to provide fish and greens. This new project, along with their chicken farming, will help immensely in providing food for their increasing number of resident teen-age boys.

Upscale Resale is located in Riberas del Pilar just east of Mom’s and Maskaras Clinic. See the website at www.shopupscale.webs.com.

Democrats

There will be no local Democrats Abroad meeting in May due to the Democrats Abroad International Conference in Puerto Vallarta May 18, 19 and 20.

Memorial Day

Look ahead to the traditional Memorial Day bash at American Legion Post 7 (Morelos 114, Chapala) on Monday, May 28. The patriotic ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. with dinner served at 2:30 p.m. The menu is pit-roasted pig, corn on the cob, broccoli salad, garlic toast and ice cream floats for dessert.

The Legion will offer one free drink to any card-carrying member of any military organization and there will be a Canadian-style meat draw (raffle). Tickets for 150 pesos are on sale now at the Post.

Poppies

Look for volunteers around town distributing the traditional Memorial Day and Veterans Day poppies. The paper poppies are made by disabled veterans and donations for the flowers are earmarked to benefit disabled veterans and/or their families. Volunteers for poppy distribution will be from the American and the Canadian Legions.

The road show

American Legion Post 7 will hold a Faux Antiques Roadshow in the format made popular by the American PBS version.

Folks are welcome to take their trash and treasures to the Legion on Sunday, May 27. Check in at 1 p.m. for inspection and stick around for the show that begins at 2 p.m.

Get a free soft appraisal on your grandma’s porcelain sugar bowl, military memorabilia, silver service, clocks and watches and whatever. Appraisers are not professionals but are knowledgeable and you’ll go home with a history and price appraisal for your treasure.

There is no admission, but reservations will be accepted for group tables. Smoking and non-smoking areas are available. Call the Legion at 765-2259.

Bakers

Cruz Roja Volunteers are planning to sell baked goods at the upcoming Am-Can Day set for July 3 at the Lake Chapala Society. They are looking for folks who to bake or who would like to purchase baking ingredients for those who do like to bake. New volunteers are always welcome. Call Beede Satterthwaite at 765-4010 for more information.

Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter on May 13, 10 a.m. with Holy Eucharist Rite II in the ground floor space at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. The sermon topic by Father Danny Borkowski is “What’s so new?” based on John 15: 9-17.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

John Lennon wrote and the Beatles interpreted the song “All You Need Is Love” in 1967. It was performed for the first live global television link and was watched by 400 million people in 26 countries. All over the world people were singing “All You Need Is Love.”

So what happened? In the gospel for Sunday, May 13, John seems to say the same thing. His gospel is read all over the world and hailed by many to be the center teaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ. So what happened? So Sunday, Father Winston Welty will try to help us figure that out.

A gift will be give to all women in the congregation at the start of the 10 a.m. service as a special gesture of gratitude for those who have “mothered” and nurtured us throughout our lives. Come for the love and stay for the fellowship and refreshment following the service. St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Presbyterians

Growing in love for God and for the people around us is the focus of the current series of messages from Pastor Ross Arnold at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. The topic on May 13 will be “Learning to Worship God.” Everyone is invited to join in the monthly “second Sunday Potluck” after the service. It will be extra special this month as we also celebrate mothers’ Day! Worship begins at 10 a.m.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. Sunday, May 13, Lew Crippen will give a talk entitled “What’s in a Word?” It explains why Unitarians avoid the use of mainstream religious descriptions but embrace alternative usages.

A coffee hour get-together will follow. For more information please call 766-1119 or email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
