First call

The Lake Chapala Society has once again come up with a line-up to please everyone in this year’s CAN/AM Celebration Day set for Monday, July 2, noon to 5 p.m. on the Lake Chapala Society campus in Ajijic.

The event will feature the LCS Used Books and Videos Sale as well as showcase table displays and sales from many local non-profit service organizations.

Favorite U.S and Canadian holiday foods and drinks will be available. There will be lots of additional activities to keep everyone in the picnic mood. The Tall Boys will be there for a rockin’ good time, too.

Aurora Michel will be the mistress of ceremonies for the event and strategically placed drink and food booths will help slake thirst and hunger.

The purpose of the event is to showcase the wide variety of non-profit and other service oriented organizations in the Lakeside area, while providing an enjoyable event for the community. Organizations are being invited to set up tables to promote their organizations and to possibly raise some funds for their projects.

Registration for table space will start Monday, May 21, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continue on weekdays until June 22. The cost of each table is 200 pesos. The fee will include two admission tickets for volunteers. Since all will be looking for your support for this fun event, you might even want to volunteer with one or more of your favorite service organizations.

Tickets for entry to the event will be 80 pesos (in advance) or 150 pesos at the door. For more information or tickets, contact June Cooper at  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 766-4939.

Memorial Day

Look ahead to the traditional Memorial Day bash at American Legion Post 7 (Morelos 114, Chapala) on Monday, May 28. The patriotic ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. with dinner begin served at 2:30 p.m. The menu is pit roasted pig, corn on the cob, broccoli salad, garlic toast and ice cream floats for dessert.

The Legion will offer one free drink to any card-carrying member of any military organization and there will be a Canadian-style meat draw (raffle). Tickets for 150 pesos are on sale now at the Post.

Poppies

Look for volunteers around town set up to distribute the traditional Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day poppies. The paper poppies are made by disabled veterans and donations for the flowers are earmarked to benefit disabled veterans and/or their families. Volunteers for poppy distribution will be from the American and the Canadian Legions.

Bakers

Cruz Roja Volunteers are planning to sell baked goods at the upcoming Am-Can Day set for July 3 at the Lake Chapala Society. They are looking for folks who like to bake or who would like to purchase baking ingredients for those who do like to bake. New volunteers are always welcome. Call Beede Satterthwaite at 765-4010 for more information.

Run

The Terranova Institute is inviting everyone to show up and run for the fourth edition of “Corre por ayudar” (Run to help) on Sunday, June 10.

Runners will pay 50 pesos, plus a bag of imperishable groceries such as beans, rice, corn flakes or pasta. Proceeds from the event will go to Cruz Roja Chapala and Villa Infantil Nuestra Señora Guadalupe y San Jose in San Pedro Tesistan.

The run is from Tobolandia to the Terranova Institute in Rancho del Oro. Advanced runners may want to run with the professionals from the Chapala Malecon to Rancho del Oro.

Register at the Terranova Institute, Galeria Di Paola or just show up at Tobolandia on June 10 before the race starts at 8 a.m. Last year nearly 200 people participated. Let’s see if we can drive that number up this year. You’ll get your exercise and help a couple of great causes.

Singles

The LCS Singles Group’s next adventure will be a boat trip to Mezcala Island on Monday, June 4.

The travelers will head out to the island by launch after a tour of the Luz Malla aquaculture site under the guidance of a marine biologist.

The fee is 150 pesos for the launch service and the guides (including gratuities). Reservations have been made at the restaurant in Mezcala for an optional lunch. The restaurant is within easy walking distance of the charming museum and the Mezcala town plaza.

The plan is to carpool and depart from the La Floresta sculpture at 9 a.m.

Tickets for the event will be available at the Lake Chapala Society office and Diane Pearl Colecciones from 10 a.m. to noon, May 21 to June 1. All Lake Chapala Society members are welcome to participate.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (LCUUF) meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. Sunday, May 20, Douglas Matoon will give a talk entitled “Androgyny is not for Sissies” – a look at transgendered people, their history and what they can teach society about sex roles and androgyny as a non-surgical option for transsexuals. Bonnie Phillips will be the service leader. A coffee hour will follow.

Saint Andrew’s Anglican

The Reverend Dr. James Priddy will be filling in for Father Winston Welty this week. He will explore how Judas’ place among the Christ’s disciples was filled. In “Just Filling In,” Father Priddy wonders with the congregation about people who only appear in the Bible in a single place – just a name and perhaps a fleeing image in some story. What happened to these people? Such a person was Matthias, who took the place of Judas to bring the number of disciples back up to 12. Was he just a place holder?

Worship at St. Andrew’s begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning with a time of fellowship and refreshment in the garden after the service. The church is located at Calle San Lucas 19 in Riberas del Pilar.

Presbyterians

Pastor Ross Arnold is continuing his series about “The Road to Christian Maturity” on Sunday, May 20 with the message of “Learning of God.” Worship begins at 10 a.m.

Pastor Ross leads a Bible study class at the church each Friday at 10 a.m. All are welcome. Lakeside Presbyterian Church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

Pentacost party

St. Andrew’s Anglican invites all in the community to celebrate the birth of the Christian Church on Sunday, May 27 (Pentacost).

There are several people who have already volunteered to read passages in 16 different languages. If you speak a language other than English and would like to add your voice to this celebration (non-members are welcome) and can attend a brief rehearsal on Saturday, May 26, contact Father Welty as soon as possible at (376) 765-7438.

Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the Seventh Sunday of Easter, the Sunday after the Ascension, on May 20, 10 a.m. with Holy Eucharist Rite II in the ground floor space at Manix Restaurant. The sermon topic for Father Danny Borkowski is “Protection,” based on John 17:6-19.
