Ante up for victims

You’ve got one more week to help out the families of innocent people killed during recent violence in the area. The Lakeside Victims’ Fund has been established to collect and distribute money to the families, many of whom are struggling to pay funeral expenses. As well as facing a loss of income from the deceased, the families, in many cases, have a need for psychological counseling that they can’t afford.

All money donated will be distributed directly to the families by well respected members of the Mexican community who have determined their individual needs.

Money should be placed in a sealed envelope. This may be taken to the office of the Lake Chapala Society (deposit in a box “The Lakeside Victims’ Fund” written on it) or to the American Legion Post Seven in Chapala (Morelos 114), and place it in the locked suggestion box in the bar.

Money can also be deposited at the Viva Mexico Restaurant in San Juan Cosala in the decorated box set on a table in the center of the eatery.

A PayPal account will be posted for those who wish to donate from afar. For more information email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Protect your pets

The rainy season and its associated storms bring thunder and lightning that can stress out your pets, particularly dogs.

Some suggestions about helping your canine through the storm are: Let the dog come inside the house during the storm.

Keep him company – nothing is as scary when you have company.

Try to distract the pet by playing games or offering treats.

Turn on some music or the television set (provided you still have electricity, of course) or a fan to muffle the sound of the thunder.

If your dog’s quality of life is seriously impaired by thunderstorms, consider speaking to your vet about anti-anxiety medication.

Little Chapel by the Lake

The next two Sundays, June 3 and June 10, will be the last two Sundays that Pastor Larry Andrew will be preaching at Lakeside. He has been the pastor at the Little Chapel by the Lake since 2003. The congregation will have a farewell potluck for Pastor Andrew from noon to 2 p.m. on June 10. All are welcome.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Trinity Sunday is the only Feast of the Church Year that celebrates a doctrine instead of an event. The doctrine of the Trinity is the experience of the one God in three distinct ways. This doctrine is the bedrock of Christian theology but is also the bane of Christian preachers.

This week, The Reverend Iris R. Slocombe, former Rector of St. Andrew’s, has volunteered to take on the challenge of proclaiming this foundational understanding of the very nature of God. The title of her sermon is “Hall of Mirrors.”

Prepare to be both challenged and inspired at the 10 a.m. Eucharist this Sunday morning, followed by a time of refreshment, welcome and fellowship in the garden.

St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the First Sunday after Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, on June 3, 10 a.m. with Communion of the Presanctified in the ground floor space at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic.

Chris Manning, vestry member and treasurer, has been authorized to lead this service by Bishop Lino Rodriguez of the Diocese of the West in the Anglican Church of Mexico. The sermon topic for Manning is “Word and Breath,” based on John 3:1-17.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday, 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. Sunday, June 3, the presentation will be “What to Do When Your World Turns Upside Down.” This talk was originally given by the Reverend Gary Kowalski and will be introduced and presented by Fred Harland. The talk discusses three things: 1.Why bad things happen to good people. 2. What to say and not to say to people who are facing major problems and 3. What to do when these bad things happen to you.

A coffee hour get together will follow the service. For more information call 766-1119 or email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. This is a welcoming congregation.

Presbyterians

This week’s guest speaker at Lakeside Presbyterian Church is Arturo Smith. His topic for the June 3 service is “Who are you going to be afraid for?’ The worship service begins at 10 a.m.

The interactive Bible study in the Book of Acts continues on Friday, June 8 at 10 a.m. Lakeside Presbyterian Church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.
