Raining cats

The Animal Shelter has a population of about 40 cats and kittens at the moment. They could certainly use more volunteers to sit and play with these fine felines, to keep them entertained and to socialize them for adoption.

You only have to commit to one day a week from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to assist in the care of all the kitties.

Talk to Cat Lady Sue at 766-5514.  Better still, stop by the Animal Shelter located on the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar. You might just find the perfect friend for your home.

The Animal Shelter continues to carry all of your pet needs at great prices in their store.

Tarahumara rain

Libby Townsend of the Tarahumara Project is holding a “Rain Dance for Chihuahua” gathering at her house at Seis Esquinas on July 22.

The lives of many of the Tarahumara people of northern Mexico  are in jeopardy due to the drought of the last two years and the intense heat (more than 45 degrees Celsius) coming their way in recent weeks.

Snacks and drinks will be offered as part of the 100-peso donation. Contact Townsend at 766-1167 or 766-3338. Donations of school supplies will also be greatly appreciated.

The Tarahumara Project operates under the umbrella of the Complejo Asistencial Clinica Santa Teresita (CACSTAC), located in Creel, Chihuahua.

Hammers

Have Hammers Will Travel has moved from its workshop on Ocampo to a new location at Hidalgo 110 at San Mateo in Riberas del Pilar.

The move is almost completed and the new workshop will allow Have Hammers to accommodate more students and be able to offer an extended program. The new workshop is about 200 feet west of the 7/11 on Hidalgo, next to a large tree. Onsite parking is available and people are invited to visit and view the new shop.

Safety

Seventy-seven members of the Country Club de Chapala – golf marshals and caddies, residents of Vista del Lago and employees of both organizations – participated in a “First Steps-First Aid” course presented by the Cruz Roja delegation of Chapala.

Topics ranged from the new and easy CPR and the Heimlich maneuver to first-aid for scorpion stings and heat exhaustion. Participants were provided with the basic information on what to do until help arrives and were given an opportunity to practice their new skills under the direction of Cruz Roja paramedics and volunteer Christie Prine. All of the information was presented in both English and Spanish.

If your community group would be interested in being better prepared in emergencies, the Cruz Roja will be pleased to be of service. For more information call 766-4990.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Too often the Church is understood  as a service organization, out to meet people’s needs. All sorts of “experts” say that the church needs to be more “user-friendly” and “consumer oriented.” It’s true that it is easy to become irrelevant by insisting “We’ve always done it that way!” But that misapprehension also trivializes the church.

This week’s sermon at St. Andrew’s by Father Winston Welty challenges all to “Forget Your Needs!” so that real needs can be met.

Sunday worship at St. Andrew’s is at 10 a.m. with a time of fellowship, welcome and refreshment after the service.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (LCUUF) meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar.

The service on July 8 will be presented by Sandy Wallin and is titled “Spirituality without Gods – A Humanist Perspective.” This will include a discussion of how humanists develop their capacities of spirit without using God as a fall-back.

A coffee hour get-together will follow. For more information please call 766-1119 or email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. LCUUF is a welcoming congregation.

Christ Church

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate The Sixth Sunday after Pentacost on July 8,10 a.m. with Holy Communion from the Presanctified Elements in the ground floor space at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic.

The celebrant will be Inez Dayer, fellowship secretary, who is authorized to lead this type of service by Lino Rodriguez Amaro, Bishop of the Diocese of the West in the Anglican Church of Mexico.

The sermon topic for Dayer is “The Took Offense at Him,” based on Mark 6:1-13.
