Sock hop

It’s time to dig those poodle skirts and bobby socks out of the closet, shake them off, practice your best dance moves and get ready for the Sock Hop set for Monday, July 30, with cocktails served at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 7, Morelos 114 in Chapala.

The menu will include Sloppy Joes, coleslaw and ice cream floats.

Entertainment will be provided by the Doo-Wops. There will be a dance contest, hula hoops and door prizes. Tickets are 100 pesos and on sale now at the Post or from members of Auxiliary Unit 7.

Democrats

Democrats Abroad, which normally meets on the third Monday of each month, will not hold meetings in July or August. The group’s president, Tim Whiting, is in the United States until September.

Democrats Abroad hosted a table at the recent Can-Am Day at the Lake Chapala Society and aided in disseminating information about the web site, VoteFromAbroad.Org. All United States voters, whatever their party affiliation, intending to vote in November of this year, must re-register using the address where they last voted. Simply insert your state and the address you used when you last voted. The site will guide you from there – providing the details of how to contact your registrar for any convoluted questions you may have. The web site is easily followed, electronically provides the required forms for registration and, when voting time nears, will also automatically provide your ballot to be signed and mailed.

Dog and cat food

The monthly pet food drive will be held on Thursday, July 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Animal Shelter Pet Food store in Riberas del Pilar. This monthly event occurs through the cooperation and hospitality of Geoffrey Kaye of the Animal Shelter and representatives of Animal Buddies, who will be present to assist you.

Your purchase will help the shelter animals, as well as Anita’s Animals, or your choice of animal rescue group. When making your purchase, please designate which rescue group you wish for the food to be held for. Don’t forget to notify the designated rescue group that you have selected. Let them know that there is a paid food purchase awaiting pick-up for them at the Shelter.

There is a great need for kitten food right now. Please help Animal Buddies feed these less fortunate animals. Thanks to all for their generosity.

A thought from Animal Buddies: If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he won’t bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man (by Mark Twain).

Freethinkers

The Lakeside Freethinkers – for atheists, agnostics, humanists and all who reject belief in the supernatural – will hold its third monthly meeting on July 18. Its growing membership, now at 50, indicates that a need is being filled for like-minded expats.

The topic to be addressed on July 18 will be “tax exemption for religious organizations.”

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Those of us of  a certain age will remember the “Amos and Andy” show, considered appallingly racist by contemporary sensibility. But there’s a much earlier Amos, a prophet whose voice will be heard this Sunday, a voice demanding that “justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

It was easy and all too comfortable to hear the voice of Amos of the 1950s but even today, as this week’s sermon points out, Amos’ voice from the eighth century B.C. can be “Too Much to Bear” with those with soft morals, soft politics or soft theology.

As always, a time of refreshment, welcome and fellowship will follow the 10 a.m. service at St. Andrew’s, located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Presbyterians

On July 15, Pastor Ross Arnold of Lakeside Presbyterian Church will continue the new series introduced last week on “The Grand Positives” (about the Ten Commandments). The topic will be “First Importance.”

Worship begins at 10 a.m. The Friday morning Bible Study, also at 10 a.m., continues in the Book of Acts. The Church is located on the mountain side of the highway just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

Birdie birthday

Don’t forget to stop by the home of hummingbird enthusiast Florence Merrifield at Independencia 2 in Ajijic on Wednesday, July 18. It’s her 80th birthday and her friends and neighbors are celebrating it by taking her sugar between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
