The event will go on as scheduled, rain or shine.

Music

The Orquesta Tipica de Autlan de Navarro delighted a full house of music lovers during a July 17 appearance at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo. Formed just four months ago under the direction of Victor Ambriz Moran, the group of 47 musicians performed an impressive repertoire of classical and modern compositions. Chapala’s own Orquesta Tipica, under the baton of Javier Raygoza, followed with a selection of lively Mexican tunes. The two groups mixed it up to close the program, raising the rafters with improvised joint renditions of La Feria de la Flores and Las Perlitas. Jalisco’s first-ever Encuentro de Orquestas Tipicas was sponsored by the Chapala municipal government.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

For many of us, perhaps no commandment is more difficult than the one that demands us to rest. Even in retirement, so many of us lead lives that never allow us to stop. Our lives drive us, compel us and eventually kill us. So when Jesus, in this week’s reading from St. Mark’s Gospel, invites his followers to “come away to a deserted place … and rest awhile,” His present day followers need to hear that as a commandment addressed to them, a commandment that they begin to obey as they gather to worship every week. The sermon title for this week by Father Winston Welty is “Would Jesus Have a Smart Phone?”

The 10 a.m. service at St. Andrew’s is always followed by a time of refreshment, welcoming and friendship. The church is located at Calle San Lucas 19 in Riberas del Pilar.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. Sunday, July 22, Bob Koches will give a presentation entitled “Choice and Happiness.” He will discuss the paradox of choice and why more is less. Kathy Koches will be the service leader. A coffee hour get together will follow. For more information call 766-1119 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
