Blood pressure

By the way, the Lake Chapala Society “Blood Pressure Group” is looking for volunteers with medical or nursing training and experience. They are a dedicated volunteer group of people who take blood pressure twice a week at the Lake Chapala Society.

If you have had training and practice taking blood pressure, please consider joining the group and sharing your experience. The schedule is flexible. You can sign up for a regular schedule or just participate once a month, whatever suits you. Contact Lindy White at 766-3053 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Canadians

The Canadian Club of Lake Chapala will kick off the new season on Wednesday, September 12 at La Nueva Posada with a program called “A Survivor’s Guide to Driving in Mexico,” presented in English by the Reporter’s Dale Hoyt Palfrey and Lakeside SVT (Secretaria de Vialidad y Transporte) Commandante Hector Magaña Rios. Everyone is welcome.

The social hour begins at 3 p.m. and the program at 4 p.m. The yearly membership fee is 180 pesos and is now due. This includes four 25-peso drink tickets. There is a 50-peso charge for non-members.

By the way, Canadian Thanksgiving dinner tickets for October 8 will also be on sale for members and their guests. This event is sold out every year, so get your tickets now.

Niños y Jovenes

The Casa Niños y Jovenes is gearing up for the new school year. There are currently about 25 kids (from first grade to high school) in residence and another 100 visiting daily to take advantage of educational opportunities. The rising costs of food have put volunteers in a bind to buy the necessary staples to keep the program going.

If you can help this very worthy cause, contact Sue Campbell at (387) 761-0623 to arrange for donation.

Globos and Shriners

A special edition to this year’s Globo Fiesta (Balloon Festival, see page 21) set for Saturday, September 8, will be the hot dog and soft drink sales by the Lake Chapala Shrine Club Loco Motive Unit. This unit is conducting fundraisers to build a permanent base for David Netherton’s model trains that he has donated to the Shrine Club.

The hot dog and soft drink sales tents will be set up to the right, just inside the entry gate at the Ajijic soccer field on Calle Revolucion (across the side street from Salvadore’s Restaurant). Hot dogs with all the trimmings and ice cold soft drinks will go for the bargain price of 10 pesos each.

So get there early and eat and drink while you watch the launching of the colorful “globos.” There is a rumor that the Shriners will launch a flying Fez globo of their own.

Democratic Convention

For the first time, all of the delegates from the Americas Region attending the Democratic National Convention will be from Mexico.

They are Tim Whiting and Sandra Loridans from Lake Chapala, and DeeDee Camhi from Puerto Vallarta.  You may be able to see them on television on Wednesday, September 5, following Bill Clinton’s speech.

After that comes the roll call of the states when they cast their votes. The votes from Democrats Abroad will be called for following those of Deleware at about 11:20 p.m. (Eastern time).

The 2012 Democratic Convention takes place in Charlotte, North Carolina from September 3-6.

Democrats meet

Democrats Abroad Chapala meets Monday, September 10, 4 p.m. at La Nueva Posada (Donato Guerra 9, Ajijic). Returning convention delegates will report on their experiences. New activities, including a movie series will be announced.

Open house

Have Hammer …Will Travel will hold an open house at their new digs on the Ajijic-Chapala Carretera in Riberas del Pilar on Thursday, September 20, between 4 and 7 p.m.

The group is proud of their new workshop that allows more students to learn wood-working skills.  The workshop will house some of the donations received from patrons in the Lakeside area. The open house will also feature items fashioned by the students.

You’ll find the new workshop across the Carretera from Bubba’s Restaurant and just west of the 7-Eleven store.

The students, volunteers and instructors can’t wait to show you around.

Get registered

Democrats Abroad will set up on the blue umbrella patio on Friday, September 7, 10 a.m. to noon to help all prospective voters (no matter their party affiliation) get re-registered to qualify to vote in the national election on November 6.

You can also do this on your own computer by going to VoteFromAbroad.Org. Answer the questions, print out your registration application, sign it and mail it soon … each state has a different deadline, so get on it now.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. “What Happened to the Catholic Church in Mexico?” is the topic that will be presented on Sunday, September 2 by Norman Woods. The brief summary will discuss the country’s evolution from the church and the government being fully integrated to the government’s separation into a secular state. A coffee hour get-together will follow. For more information please call 766-1119 or email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

St. Andrew’s Anglican

This week the congregation will be challenged to think about what business the Church is in, because too often, the Church is understood, even by its members, to be in the money business or the tradition business or the religions business. So what is the Church’s business? This week’s sermon at St. Andrew’s, “Matters of the Heart,” seeks to address that very question, as the congregation hears some harsh words Jesus directed to some very religious people. Sunday worship at St. Andrew’s is at 10 a.m. each week, with a time of fellowship, welcome and refreshment after the service. St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Presbyterians

Pastor Ross Arnold of Lakeside Presbyterian Church will preach on the reason that telling the truth is part of the Ten Commandments on Sunday, September 2. “Telling the Truth” is part of his series on The Grand Positives. Worship begins at 10 a.m. The Friday morning interactive Bible study at 10 a.m. continues in the book of Acts. The church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.
