Tea Party

The Lakeside Tea Party will meet Tuesday, September 11, 4 p.m. at Sunrise Café in Riberas del Pilar. The theme will be “What You Can Do to Influence the Vote in the USA.”

Electronic tools will be provided so that members can email and phone friends, family and others regarding the importance of the upcoming election. There will be a discussion regarding how to talk with disillusioned former Obama voters, the Republican platform and its differences from the Democratic platform.

Vaccination change

The Lake Chapala Society Health Day on September 12, 10 a.m. to noon is still on but there have been some changes.

The flu shots will not be available as announced and won’t be ready until the end of September. You’ll be able to get them at the next LCS Health Day on October 10. However, vaccinations for Typhoid (in a limited amount) will be available, so sign up for them now at the LCS office. The cost is 450 pesos.

Be sure to start your series of Hepatitis A/B Combo. (First one now, second one in a month and the third one in six months.) Sign up at LCS is necessary. Each shot costs 700 pesos and you don’t have to get them all at LCS. Don’t understand? Show up at Health Day and all will be revealed.

Celebrate Mexico

The Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 7 in Chapala are throwing a “Viva Mexico” party on Thursday, September 13, with cocktails at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.

It’s an all-you-can-eat Mexican fare, with a mariachi band, games, a costume contest and photos ops with and/or as your favorite Mexican character.

Tickets are 170 pesos. They are on sale at the Post (Morelos 114 in Chapala) or at Salvador’s Restaurant in Ajijic on Monday, September 10.

Navy League

The next meeting of the Navy League Lake Chapala Council will be on Saturday, September 15, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant (Ocampo 57, Ajijic).

Following lunch the presentation “Mexico: Far More Important than We Think” will be given by Rick Rhoda, co-author with Tony Burton of “Geo Mexico: the Geography and Dynamics of Modern Mexico.”

Rhoda has lived in Ajijic since 1999. His 25 years with the U.S. Agency for International Development included long-term assignments in the Philippines, Somali, Egypt, Honduras and Washington.

His talk will focus on Mexico’s position in the world as well as touching on current issues such as poverty, ethnic groups, education, health, environmental concerns, economic trends, monopolies, elections, drug wars and corruption.

To become a Navy League member you do not need prior military service. The Council is open to all, regardless of nationality. Medical aid

Niños Incapacitados, the local charity that has been helping children since 1993 by reimbursing their families for medical expenses, will resume its monthly general meetings on Thursday, September 13. Coffee and cookies are on at 10 a.m. and the meeting begins at 10:30 a.m.

One of the children in the program will be introduced and there will be brief presentations from board members. These meetings provide an ideal opportunity to learn about the organization and meet volunteers. Everyone is welcome.

Independence Day

You’re bound to have a blast at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Mexican Independence Day party on Sunday, September 16, 2-5 p.m.

The ticket includes a traditional Mexican dinner of birria, pozole, tacos al pastor, sopes and tacos dorados, catered by Manix Restaurant. Entertainment will be provided by Chuy of Ajijic and Ricardo and Blanca. Several municipal dignitaries have been invited. The kids will have fun with the greased pole climbing, a sack race, globos and karaoke. Kids under 10 are admitted and eat free when accompanied by an adult.

Health and beauty

The Lakeside Women’s Health and Beauty Fair is set for Tuesday, October 16, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Hotel Real de Chapala in La Floresta, with speakers beginning at 9:15 a.m.

Professional speakers will talk about relevant issues such as general health maintenance, bone strength, heart and skin protection. Plastic surgery and “Sex after 60” are also on the agenda, along with some informative and entertaining beauty and style tips. There will be a silent auction and many information and sales booths.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Niños Incapacitados, Cruz Roja, CSI 1-800-TIPS, Employment-Dignity-Security (EDS) and Humane Education Alliance (HEA).

Waldorf school

The Waldorf Elementary School begins its third year on September 17.  On Sunday, September 16, 10:30 a.m. at the Open Circle meeting at the Lake Chapala Society, teacher Veronica Cardoso will explain the merits of this educational system founded in Germany in 1919 by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner.

On the bus

An upcoming community bus trip to the Guadalajara Zoo to benefit Cruz Roja Chapala is set for Thursday, September 20.

The bus leaves La Floresta at 9 a.m. and returns about 5 p.m. The cost of 300 pesos includes the bus fare and admission to all areas of the zoo, including the train ride, safari and aquarium. Meals are not included, but food vendors are available on the grounds.

Purchase the tickets at the Cruz Roja table on the Lake Chapala Society grounds.

Support

The Cancer and Life Threatening Disease Support Group (for men and women) meets the first and third Monday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Members share helpful ways to cope with the life-altering impact of serious diseases. The Women’s Cancer and Life Threatening Disease Support Group (specifically for women) meets the second and fourth Monday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Contact details as above.

HU Song

Everyone is invited to participate in a HU Song held on the third Saturday of every month from 10:30 to 11 a.m., followed by a fellowship time. The HU Song is a contemplative spiritual exercise. It is held at the Spiritual Center on Calle Nicolas Bravo 17B in Ajijic. People of all faiths are welcome. The September HU Song is scheduled for Saturday, September 15. Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost on September 9, 9:30 a.m. with the Holy Eucharist Rite II at The Little Chapel by the Lake. The topic of Father Danny Borkowksi’s sermon is “Life-Changing Crises,” based on Mark 7:24-37. There will be a joint fellowship time for Christ Church and the Little Chapel by the Lake congregation at 10:30 a.m.

Presbyterians

September 9, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, John Whitener will preach on “More than a Conqueror” from Romans 8:37. Worship begins at 10 a.m. and the Second Sunday Brunch – open to all – will be at 11:30 a.m. The Friday morning Bible study at 10 a.m. continues on September 14 with Pastor Ross Arnold studying the Book of Acts.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. Sunday, September 9, Helen White will deliver the talk “Be Who You Are,” a tribute to Rev. Forrest Church, a Unitarian minister who wrote works to live by: “Want what you have, Do what you can, Be who you are.” Bill White will be the service leader. Everyone is welcome.

Little Chapel by the Lake

Sunday, September 9, Ken Vega will preach at the Little Chapel by the Lake on “Renewing/Changing the Mind.” The service begins at 11:15 after a combined fellowship hour with the Christ Church congregation.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

On Sunday, September 9, St. Andrew’s Church is honored to welcome the Reverend Canon Habacuc Ramos-Huerta, the general secretary of the Anglican Church of Mexico. Although Canon Habacuc’s workplace is at national church headquarters in Mexico City, his home and family are in Tlaquepaque and he has agreed to preside at a workshop and preach for the next two Sundays that Rector Winston Welty will be absent.

Thursday, September 13, St. Andrew’s second annual Mexican Fiesta will celebrate the Independence of Mexico. The famous Cinco Potrillos Restaurant in Ixtlahuacan will be serving up their delicious chicken and beef fajitas, rice, beans and tortillas along with guacamole and salsa. Social hour starts at 1 p.m. with comida commencing at 2 p.m. Tickets for 150 pesos will be available after church on Sunday.
