Health Day

The next Lake Chapala Society Health Day is set for Wednesday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Flu shots will cost 300 pesos, typhoid shots 450 pesos, pneumonia shots 350 pesos. (Pneumonia shots given before 2011 are good for five years. Those given in 2012 are good for life.)

The Hepatitis A/B Combo series of three are 300 pesos for each shot and 2,100 pesos for the series. (It’s very important to complete the entire series with the second shot one month after the first and a booster six months later.)

Pay for shots the day they are administered at the nurse’s station.

Skin cancer screening is from 10 a.m. to noon (sign-up necessary). Blood sugar screening is also from 10 a.m. to noon with no sign up necessary but those being tested should eat a high carbohydrate meal two hours before the test, such as pancakes, oatmeal, granola, fruit, juice, etc.

Blood pressure will be taken from 10 a.m. to noon in the Talking Books Room.

Bus trip

The next Lake Chapala Society (LCS) bus trip is on Wednesday, October 3, to the Galerias Mall in Guadalajara. Sign up is at the LCS table on the LCS campus, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The trip leaves from the sculpture at La Floresta promptly at 9 a.m., with the return trip leaving the mall at 3:30 p.m. The price is 200 pesos.

Debates

Democrats Abroad Chapala is staging events for the four televised U.S. presidential debates to be aired prior to the general election.

They will be held at Salvador’s Restaurant on Wednesday, October 3; Thursday, October 11 (vice presidential debate); Tuesday, October 16 and Monday, October 22.  Donations will be accepted. Salvador’s kitchen will be closed but a cash bar will be open from 7:30 p.m.  The debates start at 8 p.m. and last for 90 minutes.  All are welcome.

Voting

Democrats Abroad Chapala Chapter will continue with its non-partisan registration program for the U.S. general election at Salvador’s Restaurant from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and at the Lake Chapala Society on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon. A box will be in place to collect completed ballots to be turned over to officers from the United States Consulate on their regular monthly visit to Lakeside on Wednesday, October 3. The ballots will then be taken to the United States in the diplomatic pouch.

Bazaar

Many of your favorite non-profit organizations will be out in force for a community bazaar on Sunday, September 30, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Flora Exotica across the libramiento from Centro Laguna. Hopefully, you will find everything and anything you can think of and some things you never even knew about.

This will also be a special dog and cat adoption day. Anyone who knows of a dog or cat needing a home is welcome to bring them (at no charge). They must be on a leash or in a carrier and current on their vaccinations.

Women’s health

The Women’s Health and Beauty Fair is set for Tuesday, October 21, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Hotel Real de Chapala. Look for professional and relevant health information, useful and entertaining beauty tips, a delicious buffet lunch, a silent auction and many great information and sales booths.

All proceeds will be donated to local charities.

Thanks

Don’t miss the kermes being staged by some of the families of the children helped by Programa Pro Niños Incapacitados del Lago. They are saying “thanks” for the help they have been given with this fun little country fair on Sunday, October 21, in Chapala’s Cristiania Park, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The mothers will be donating their best cooking and serving lots of delicious Mexican food. There will also be a bazaar.

Chapala City Hall will donate all proceeds from the tickets to enter the park (five pesos for adults, two pesos for children), the use of the swimming pool and the lavatories. Everyone is welcome to come and have a great time. Put it on your calendar.

British Society

The Lake Chapala British Society will meet Saturday, October 6, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. The speaker will be Society President Ceri Dando, who will talk about being prepared for medical emergencies.

The luncheon menu is a choice of pork ribs, cole slaw and baked beans or grilled fish with tartar sauce, a small salad included, for 120 pesos, including tip. Restaurant

If you’re wondering where Mel’s Diner went, you’ll find its replacement, Mel’s Local Steak House and Bar, opening Sunday, September 30, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for brunch in the space behind the Ajijic Plaza Suites across Colon from the Ajijic Plaza. Taking over the management of Mel’s will be Melanie Sarciron (for whom the original Melanie’s was named). Her father, Bernard Sarciron will be at the grill.

Thrift store

The Tepehua Community Center in Chapala is opening a new thrift and consignment shop in Riberas del Pilar.

“Tepehua Treasures” will open sometime during the first week of October. Regular hours will be Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the new digs at Carretera 98 (two doors away from Magaña’s restaurant) in Riberas del Pilar. All proceeds from sales at the store will benefit the Tepehua Community Center.

Got junk?

Libby Townsend of the Tarahumara Project is looking for your junk for her upcoming annual giant yard sale held each fall to benefit the free Tarahumara hospital in the Copper Canyon (Santa Teresita). You can take your donations to the Guadalajara Reporter office in Plaza Bugambilias, Monday through Friday from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Or, if you have a lot of stuff or can’t make it to Plaza Bugambilias, call 766-1167 for pick-up. Folks in Guadalajara or in neighborhoods around Lake Chapala can collect their stuff together and call for the truck. She’ll accept anything as long as it’s legal, she doesn’t have to feed it, freeze it or clean up after it.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

This week’s (Sunday, September 30) sermon at St. Andrew’s Anglican by Father Winston Welty is named “Shock Therapy.” It’s based on some not-so-favorite Bible passages that are a central part of Jesus’ message in the days before his death. These words need to be taken seriously. Worship at St. Andrew’s begins at 10 a.m. and is always followed by a time of refreshment, welcome and fellowship. The Church is located at Calle San Lucas 19 in Riberas del Pilar.

Presbyterians

God has wonderful plans for our area! Pastor Ross Arnold’s message at Lakeside Presbyterian Church on Sunday, September 30 is “Building the Kingdom Part 2.” He will talk about what’s in store for the Lakeside community and the church. Worship begins at 10 a.m.

The Friday morning interactive Bible study is at 10 a.m., continuing in the Book of Acts. Lakeside Presbyterian is located on the Ajijic-Chapala Carretera just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

Unitarians

The Lakeside Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday, 10:30 a.m. at Santa Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. Sunday, September 30, Janice Kimball will give a well-researched talk about the “Ecosystem Versus the Family of Man.” The talk will include questions about what will be in store for those who follow us. Will there be generations that follow them? Are there answers? Come and listen to this talk centering on the earth’s dwindling resources.

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost on September 30, with Holy Communion, Rite I, using the Morning Prayer Rite 1 as the Liturgy of the Word at the Little Chapel by the Lake at 9:30 a.m. Stay for the fellowship time with the congregation of the Little Chapel by the Lake.
