Shrine dining

“Dine with the Shrine” is back on Thursday, November 15 at Los Telares (Morelos 6, Ajijic).

Special lunches/dinners will be served from noon to 9 p.m. The hosts, Caesar and Ricardo, have planned two great entrees at a cost of only 125 pesos.

The first entrée is Chicken Breast in Tomato Sauce on Linguini. The second choice is Sea Bass with Lemon Sauce. Tip, drinks, salad and dessert are not included.

The restaurant will donate 100 percent of the special lunch and dinner sales to the Lake Chapala Shrine Club. The funds will benefit the club’s activities, most importantly helping Lakeside kids with medical needs.

Reservations can be made by calling (376) 766-0428 or by visiting the restaurant. When you make the reservations, indicate that you’re going to be there for the special lunch/dinner and your menu choice.

Get a group together and have some fun and a great meal in the great ambiance of Los Telares.

Did you know that thanks to community support, the Lake Chapala Shrine Club has helped nearly 500 kids in the last six years at a cost of more than 1.2 million pesos? That’s right! The Shriners look forward to seeing you on November 15.

For the Tarahumara

The October “mother of all garage (driveway) sales” benefiting the Tarahumara indigenous people of the Copper Canyon and the Santa Teresita Free Hospital, opens its gates Saturday, October 27, 10 a.m. at Ocampo 98 (Seis Esquinas) in Ajijic.

There’s everything from electronics, art, shoes, jewelry, clothing for men and women (fancy and not), home décor, furniture, carpets and more.

Bazaar

Several local non-profit organizations will participate in the community bazaar on Sunday. October 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Flora Exotica. There’s always lots of neat stuff from antiques, to tools, electronics, clothing for men, women and kids, as well as handmade items.

This will be a dog and cat adoption day. Anyone who knows of a dog or a cat that needs a home is welcome to bring then at no cost. However, they must be on a leash or in a carrier and current on their vaccinations. Please contact Lori Geiger in advance if you’re bringing an animal to be sure that there is ample space. Ancestors

The next meeting of the Genealogy Forum takes place Monday, October 29, 1 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Sala.

Phyl Gaskell will discuss the challenge of Irish records: what is still available, where to find them and how to search for them. There are many websites and databases that might unearth your Irish ancestor. The Genealogy Forum is open to all, no matter the national background. Survivors

The Survivors’ Club meets on Tuesday, October 30, 5 p.m. at the Sunrise Café in San Antonio Tlayacapan (located on the Carretera on the lake side between the hardware and the furniture stores). There is sufficient parking right in front. All are welcome!

Brits meet

The British Society meets on Saturday, November 3, 1 p.m. at  Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic.

The speaker will be Marcia Hughes, who will share her experiences with a personal emergency response system that she has had installed without any activation costs, no monthly fees and that can program up to four telephone numbers.

The menu choices for the meeting are Chicken Parmesan, veggies and twice baked potatoes or grilled fish picatta with mushroom sauce. A small salad is included with each of these for a total of 120 pesos (including tip). Order a large salad for 80 pesos. Dessert is flan.

Country Critters

Gudren Jones, president of the Lakeside Spay and Neuter Ranch, holds her annual Country Critter bash on Thursday, November 4, 4 p.m. at Paseo del Mirador 14 in La Floresta.

The event features a great prime rib dinner, lots of entertainment from Mike Ritchie and Carol Bedford, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. All of the proceeds to the care and feeding of the 78 dogs sheltered at the ranch. Spay and Neuter also adopts dogs out to good homes. All are spayed, neutered, vaccinated and beautifully cared for. Community support for this project is essential and has historically been generous. Keep it up.

Democrats

The Democrats Abroad Voter Assistance program was a big success and much appreciated by the nearly 140 folks (on both sides of the ballot) who took advantage of the offer. Democrats Abroad delivered about 400 ballots to the U.S. Consulate to be sent by diplomatic pouch to the United States. Of course, many local absentee voters handled delivery of their ballots on their own.  (Those who missed the Lake Chapala deadline will have to hot foot it down to the Consulate in Guadalajara to hand in their ballots and hope that they arrive at their destinations in time.)

Look for Democrats Abroad’s election night party on Tuesday, November 6, beginning at 6 p.m. at Club Exotica behind the El Jardin Restaurant on the Ajijic plaza. Admission will be 50 pesos.

Bus trip

The Lake Chapala Society will sponsor a bus trip to the crafts centers of Tonala and Tlaquepaque on Wednesday, November 14. The bus leaves from the sculpture in La Floresta at 9 a.m. and returns from Tlaquepaque at 4 p.m. The price is 200 pesos. Sign up at the LCS table Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Universities

The International Institute will hold its second annual University Expo on Tuesday, November 13, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Centro Laguna Shopping Mall in Ajijic. Students will have the opportunity to review all of the programs available from each university and take home brochures and other material with information. Some of the universities expected to participate are UNIVA, Universidad Marista, Universidad Lamar, Universidad America Latina, Tec Milenio, Universidad Cuauhtemoc, ITESO, Tecnologico de Monterrey, Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, UNIVER, UNITEC, ITAC, UTEG and UVM.

Lily Ehlebracht, general director of the International Institute, believes that students at Lakeside should become acquainted with options in higher learning so that they can make good choices for their futures.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

“On the Way” is the title for this Sunday’s (October 28) sermon at St. Andrew’s. It will explore the predicament of this “son of fear” who became fearless enough to claim his healing and what his example means to all who are “children of fear.” Worship at St. Andrew’s begins at 10 a.m. with a time of welcome, fellowship and refreshment following the service. The church is located at Calle San Lucas 19 in Riberas del Pilar.

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. The service on Sunday, October 28 will be presented by Joel Gomez. He will speak about the Day of the Dead, its history, traditions and beliefs. Bob Koches will be the service leader. The congregation is invited to bring a picture of a love one or a pet who has passed away to lay on the Day of the Dead altar. A luncheon will follow the service. Christ Church Anglican

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate the twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost on October 28 with Holy Communion form the Reserved Sacrament at The Little Chapel by the Lake at 9:30 a.m. Jim Powers, Warden of Christ Church, who is approved by Bishop Lino Rodriguez of the Diocese of the West in the Anglican Church of Mexico to lead such services, will preside and preach. The sermon topic will be “Persistence, Faith and Gratitude,” based on Mark 10:46-52. The service will be followed by a time of fellowship in which the congregations of Christ Church and the Little Chapel share.

Presbyterians

Pastor Ross Arnold will continue his series on Meeting Jesus on Sunday, October 28 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, with a message about “Getting Away,” using Mark 1:35-45 as the text. Worship begins at 10 a.m. The Friday morning interactive Bible study at 10 a.m. continues in the book of Acts. The church is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.
