Memorial Service

A memorial service for the late David Netherton, the Chapala Garden Railway builder, will be held at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo museum (the old Chapala Railway Station) on Sunday, January 20 at 2 p.m.

This service will be combined with the Lake Chapala Shrine Club’s dedication of Netherton’s garden model railroad.

The base for the operation of model trains has been constructed using old railway cross ties donated to the project by the Jalisco Secretariat of Culture. The operation of these battery powered remote control model trains will be a permanent feature at the museum.

Model railroading is the second largest hobby in the world, second only to stamp collecting.

Netherton’s widow Susan hopes all model train admirers, Shriners and friends of her husband will attend this celebration of his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake Chapala Shrine Club Locomotive Unit to help complete Netherton’s dream.

Foster parents

The folks who created the Lucky Dog Rescue and Adoption Center could use more volunteers at the shelter to help socialize and exercise the dogs in residence. A full shift is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. but volunteers are welcome to commit to a few hours each week.

The center has plenty of space for the dogs to run and play and get used to people being nice to them.

The group also would love to hear from those who are willing to foster certain dogs in need of special attention, such as ones recovering from surgery. Please let them know if you can be a foster parent.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Water into wine? What in the world can an old Sunday School story like that reveal about the nature of God? What can it possibly tell us about what it means to be a person of faith in the secular, technological, dog-eat-dog world? Those are the questions we face this week and those faced in the sermon, “Stone Jars in Every Seat.” For one person’s answer that may help you find your own answers, join the folks at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church for worship at 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. and be sure to enjoy the fellowship time between the services. St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19 just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

In this presentation, Dr. Rick Rhoda, co-author of “Geo-Mexico: The Geography and Dynamics of Modern Mexico,” brings to life aspects of Mexico that we often fail to appreciate.
