Dine with the Shrine
A Dine with the Shrine fundraising event will be held on Tuesday, October 22 at the Hotel Nueva Posada in Ajijic. Special lunches/dinners will be served from noon to 6 p.m. The hosts, Michael and Maria Eager, have two great entrees planned at a cost of only 130 pesos. Both include a small house salad with vinaigrette dressing and a bolillo (bread roll) with butter.
Entrées are fried chicken breast steak with mashed potato and vegetables, or Veracruz style fish fillet with rice and vegetables.
Reservations may be made by calling (376) 766-1444 or at the restaurant. Indicate that you will be coming for the Special Shriner Dinner.
The restaurant will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from special lunch/dinner sales to the Lake Chapala Shrine Club to benefit their activities, most importantly helping lakeside children with medical needs.
In the seven-year period from 2006 to 2012 the Lake Chapala Shrine Club helped over 850 children with 1,535,800 pesos. However, the club’s Transportation Fund continues at an uncomfortably low level – hence the latest Dine with the Shrine.

Oktoberfest
American Legion Post Seven in Chapala is holding an Oktoberfest feast on Tuesday, October 22. On the menu for dinner will be roast pork loin, red cabbage, German potato salad and German chocolate cake.
Cocktails start at 5 p.m. from the no- host bar, with dinner served at 6 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by “La Legion del Sur.”

Great raffle prize

Talk on GMOs
Are you curious about the increasing use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture? Learn more about controversial topic at the Open Circle meeting scheduled for Sunday, October 13, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society, 16 de Septiembre 16a, Ajijic. Guest speaker Arnt J. Thorkildsen has travelled the world and studied food production and farming practices in Norway, Portugal, the Philippines, and Korea, as well as apple orchards and wheat fields in Washington state. His ample research on GMOs, pesticides and chemical fertilizers and their effects on world food production has included attendance at organized seminars presented by the Monsanto and Dow chemical companies.
LCS Singles
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Singles group will host a social on Thursday, October 17, starting at 5 p.m. at La Bodega in Aiijic.
The event will feature DJ music from the 1950’s to the 70’s between 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., specials and a two-for-one drink special with the meal. There is no admission or cover charge.
Dinner specials, which all come with side dishes, feature a choice of bbq ribs (85 pesos), Arrachera fajitas (85 pesos), ginger chicken (85 pesos), pesto shrimp risotto (85 pesos), spaghetti pomodoro (65 pesos). Pet food drive
The monthly pet food drive will be held on Thursday, October 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Animal Shelter pet food store in Riberas del Pilar.
This event occurs on the third Thursday of every month thanks to the support of the Animal Shelter’s Geoffrey Kaye and the assistance of Animal Buddies representatives who will be present to help you.
With your purchase you help the Shelter cats as well as Anita’s Animals, or your choice of animal rescue group. You can make a purchase of dog or cat food at anytime if you are unable to come to the food drive. When making your purchase, inform the store clerk whether the pet food is for Anita’s Animals, or another animal rescue group, and the Animal Shelter will hold your donation purchase for pickup.
After you have made this purchase, you will need to contact the designated rescue group you have selected. Please let that group know that there is a paid food purchase made by you waiting to be picked up at the Shelter.
Man’s best friend
Lakeside Spay and Neuter Ranch holds its next bi-monthly Adoption Day clinic on Saturday, October 19, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Pet Care, located on the highway in Riberas del Pilar a few doors east of Café Magaña. A variety of pups and adult canines will be there panting for loving homes. The pet supply store contributes 10 percent of sales tabs to the ranch for purchases made on adoption days and any other date when customers mention the dog rescue organization.
Bus trip
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) trip to Guadalajara’s Plaza Galerias will be held on Tuesday, October 29. The bus leaves from the sculpture area in La Floresta at 9:30 a.m. and returns from the Costco area at 4 p.m. Department stores and restaurants located in the mall include Liverpool, Sears, Best Buy, Home Store, Sanborns, Applebees, Outback Steakhouse, plus many more. Adjacent are Sams, Walmart, Costco and Mega. The price of the trip is 200 pesos. Sign up at LCS, Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Presentation
On October 6, Tony Rojas, a native of San Juan Tecomatlan, presented an interesting program at the Little Chapel by the Lake on his work as a missionary in Norway and the Middle East with the program Youth With A Mission (YWAM). The main focus of Rojas’ work has been with refugees from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and refugees from Africa who have fled to Norway. He also works with teenagers and children in Norway and Israel.
Rojas has worked with YWAM since 2005 and will return to Norway in November.
Unitarians on the move
On Sunday, October 20, the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (LCUUF) will move to its new home on the west side of Ajijic.
They will be meeting at the Plaza de la Ribera (formerly Sol y Luna), Rio Bravo 10.
The LCUUF will continue to begin its service at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday and look forward to welcoming all those who wish to join them. Call 766-1119 for more information.
Sunday, October 13 will be LCUUF’s last week to meet at Sta. Margarita 113 (southwest corner of Santa Clara and Sta. Margarita) in Riberas del Pilar. The topic will be “Life Lessons Learned Living in Other Cultures.” The panel members will be Kathy Koches, Sue Kelley, Chris Lane, Paul Bennett, Norman Woods and Susan and David Miller. A coffee hour will follow the service.
Buddhist Community
The Heart of Awareness (HOA) Buddhist Community meets for meditation and dharma teachings on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Center for Creative Being (16 de Septiembre 53, Ajijic).

Center for Spiritual Living
The Reverend Tim Schubert presents “Are You a Seeker or a Pilgrim?” at the regular celebration at the Center for Spiritual Living (Nicolas Bravo 17, Ajijic) on Friday, October 18, from 5-6 p.m. A social hour will follow.

Hu Song
Everyone is invited to participate in a Hu Song held on the third Saturday of every month at the Spiritual Center at Nicolas Bravo 17B, Ajijic.
The HU Song is a contemplative spiritual exercise which helps bring inner peace and more love in your life. People of all faiths are welcome.
The October HU Song is scheduled for Saturday, October 19, from 10:30 to 11 a.m., and is followed by a fellowship time. The door is monitored and closed at 10:30 a.m., so be sure to arrive no later than 10:20 a.m.

Little Chapel
The Little Chapel by the Lake will continue its emphasis on missions on Sunday, October 13. John Whitner will speak on behalf of Fuego de Cielo, which holds classes at the Little Chapel by the Lake. Sunday’s service will also include a sermon by Rev. Gene Raymer titled “Magicians Frustrate Me.” After the service members of the congregation will visit a local restaurant for a fellowship meal.
St. Andrew’s Anglican
In this week’s familiar story of the ten lepers healed by Jesus, only one of whom returns to give thanks, Jesus asks, “Where are the nine?” Most sermons focus on that same question, and wax eloquent about how those nine recipients of God’s healing should have been more grateful. Fr. Winston Welty disagrees with that emphasis, because he considers himself and almost everyone else to be included among those nine, and is convinced Jesus already knew the answer to His rhetorical question. The real, more important question, as this week’s sermon asks, is “Where is the Tenth?” Who was that one who couldn’t help himself, disobeyed his instructions, and found himself flat on his face at Jesus’s feet? It’s his faith that is the point of the story, his devotion that is meant to be an example to people of faith. Worship at St. Andrew’s begins for children at 9:45 a.m., followed by worship at 10 a.m., and a post-worship time of fellowship and welcome in the garden.

Christ Church Anglican
Christ Church Anglican fellowship will celebrate the 21st Sunday after Pentecost on October 13 by celebrating the holy Eucharist Rite 11 at 9:30 a.m. in the Little Chapel by the Lake (Carretera 10, Chula Vista). Deacon Rob Wells’ sermon topic is” The One in Ten” based on Luke 17, verses 11 through 19.
Christ Church and the Little Chapel are resuming their joint fellowship time this week in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel between their two services, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
