British Society

The Lakeside British Society holds its monthly luncheon Saturday, June 3, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57, Ajijic. Lina Doyle will be talking about how to really learn and use a foreign language as an older person.

Menu choices begin with a small salad or lentil soup, choice of shepherd’s pie or fish and chips or chile relleno (stuffed chile) or a large salad. Dessert is chocolate mousse. The cost is 150 pesos plus tip.

Open Circle

Sunday, June 4, Ad Líbitum Compañía de Ópera de Guadalajara will present “Opera as You Like It” at the Open Circle in the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Sala, 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Returning to Open Circle by popular demand are María de Jesús Cárdenas (soprano); Teresa Banderas (mezzosoprano); José Luís Villarruel (tenor) and Ricardo Lavín (baritone). These vocalists are at the top of their careers, having performed at prestigious venues throughout Mexico with major orchestras, and sung a wide variety of roles and won numerous awards. Their program will include arias from the operatic works of Mozart, Bizet, Bellini and Rossini. They will be accompanied by Juan Pablo Piano on piano.

Mud Fest

Off-road enthusiasts are revving up for another day of mud-bogging madness at the Festival Chapala en Lodo (Mud Fest), set for Sunday, June 4, from 11 a.m. The wet and wild happening for ATV, UTV, 4x4 and other motorized vehicle dare devils takes place along the mucky stretch of shoreline running a short distance south of the old railway station, with an entrance connecting from Avenida González Gallo. Admission is set at 70 pesos per person, free for kids.

LCS seminar

Lake Chapala Society members are invited to attend a TED seminar, hosted by Susan Weeks, on “Three Principles for Creating Safer A.I.” on Tuesday, June 6, noon to 1:15 p.m. in the LCS Sala. 

How can we harness the power of super-intelligent artificial intelligence (A.I.)? As we move closer toward creating all-knowing machines, A.I. pioneer Stuart Russell is working on something a bit different: robots with uncertainty. Hear his vision for human-compatible A.I. that can solve problems using common sense, altruism and other human values.

Buddhists

The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Sangha offers several opportunities for meditation practice each week. Wednesdays the center opens at 3:30 p.m. with a formal meditation period, from 4-6 p.m. The one hour sitting and walking meditation is followed by a talk (live or recorded) and an opportunity for discussion. The sangha is open for silent sitting and walking meditation on Sundays and Mondays from 9-10 a.m. and on Thursdays from 11 a.m.-noon.

Sunday, June 4 is the first Sunday of the month, so there will be a longer meditation opportunity, 9 a.m.-noon.

The Heart of Awareness is grounded in the teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Prior experience or affiliation is not required. Legion Spanish classes

Grammar classes are held Saturdays, noon, at the American Legion Post 7 in Chapala, while a conversation club is held Thursdays, also at noon. Bring a notebook and pen to class. LCS Spanish classes

The Lake Chapala Society has announced its next round of Introduction to Spanish language classes for members. This is a casual class offered for the beginner that covers the Spanish alphabet, simple vocabulary and phrases to use about town for shopping, and other useful information about the area and Mexican culture. 

Classes are held each Tuesday beginning June 6 and run through June 20 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the LCS campus. Learning materials are included in the 175-peso cost. You must be a LCS member to attend.

LCS picnic

The second annual Lake Chapala Society Picnic and Beer Fest is slated for Saturday, June 17, 2-6 p.m. 

Music will be by the Ajijic Jamm Band. Various microbreweries, including Fortuna, Corazon Malta and Naipe, will offer their most recent brews for sale. The menu features hamburgers, hot dogs, corn-on-the-cob with all the fixings and scrumptious pies and cakes. 

A raffle for a luxurious two-night stay at the oceanfront Villa La Estancia Beach Resort & Spa, Riviera Nayarit is scheduled.

Tickets are 100 pesos for members, 150 pesos for non-members, 180 pesos on the day at the gate (if not sold out) and are available at the Lake Chapala Society.

U.S. Flag Day

If you have an unserviceable U.S. flag that needs to be properly disposed of, you can drop it off at American Legion Post 7, Morelos 114 in Chapala, before U.S. Flag Day on June 14.

LCS Bus Trip

The Lake Chapala Society hosts a bus trip to Guadalajara’s Galerias Mall, with its adjacent Costco, Sam’s and Super Walmart stores, Wednesday, June 28. Major retailers include Best Buy, Sears and H&M, while restaurant choices include Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang and Applebee’s. 

Cost is 350 pesos for members and 450 pesos for non-members. The bus departs promptly at 9:30 a.m. from the sculpture in La Floresta.
