A delightful garden party was enjoyed by Lakeside Garden Guild members at their June meeting on the estate of Janet Capetillo of Guadalajara. Capetillo shared how magnolia leaves can enhance floral arrangements, giving members fresh ideas for their entries in the Guild’s annual November Floral Design Show. President Georgia Barneburg chats with Celina Haramis after taking a guided tour of the extensive lush gardens.

Michele Lococo and Allison Quattrocchi were the first place winners at The Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic’s competition held June 19.

Open Circle

Sunday, June 25, Luis Enrique Ramos will present “Water Governance in Mexico: Managing Scarcity” at the Open Circle in the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Sala, 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Ramos, local Attorney at Law and notary public, has worked during the last 17 years in water-related projects as an independent consultant at all three levels of government, as well as for not-for-profit and international organizations. His primary legal expertise lies in water governance, aligning the interests of and resolving conflicts among stakeholders in the water sector.

He will speak about what is happening with water policy in Mexico, what is being done to address problems of water pollution, scarcity, and usage, as well as projects to clean the water of rivers and lakes in Mexico, specifically of Lake Chapala. He will address government policy with regard to big infrastructure projects and issues related to the human right to water and how to implement better policy for both surface and underground water in Mexico.

Genealogy Forum

Discovering stories about your family through pictures is the subject of the next meeting of the Genealogy Forum, Monday June 26, 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Riberas del Pilar. The program will be both a workshop and a presentation on how to identify photographs by age, type, photographer and occasion.  Ilona de Borhegyi, a professional photographer and photo historian, will be the speaker. She will describe the history of portrait photography, particularly related to family and event pictures which tell stories by image alone - especially useful when no information has been recorded about the pictures. Ajijic Book Club

Members of the Ajijic Book Club (ABC) will read and discuss a book with a strange but meaningful title, “Thank You for Being Late”, by Thomas Friedman, the Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times columnist, at their next meeting, Tuesday, June 27, 4 p.m. at Just Chillin, located at Constitucion 32 in Ajijic. LCS seminar

Lake Chapala Society members are invited to attend a TED seminar, hosted by Reba Mayo, on “Facing the Future Without Fear Together” by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, Tuesday, June 27, noon to 1:15 p.m. in the LCS Sala. 

“These are the times that try men’s souls, and they are trying our’s now,” begins Rabbi Sacks in a provocative and electrifying talk about how we can face our increasingly uncertain future. The world is changing faster than we can bear. To solve the most pressing issues of the day, we must cultivate relationships based on community, cooperation and trust to counteract the fear, anxiety and isolation prevalent today.

LCS Bus Trip

The Lake Chapala Society hosts bus trips to Guadalajara’s Galerias Mall, with its adjacent Costco, Sam’s and Super Walmart stores, Wednesday, June 28 and Thursday, July 27. Major retailers include Best Buy, Sears and H&M, while restaurant choices include Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang and Applebee’s.

Cost is 350 pesos for members and 450 pesos for non-members. The bus departs promptly at 9:30 a.m. from the sculpture in La Floresta.

Criminal complaints

You can file a formal complaint (denuncio) at the Lake Chapala Society with help from a bilingual lawyer from the Jalisco Attorney General’s office (Fiscaleria del Estado) Wednesday, June 28, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LCS Talking Books Library.

British Society

The Lakeside British Society holds its monthly luncheon Saturday, July 1, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57, Ajijic. Mark Foster will explore the theme “Living with English blood and a Mexican heart.”  He has a unique outlook on living in Mexico because, although being born here, his parents are English.

Menu choices begin with a small salad or mushroom soup, choice of fish with almond sauce or carne asada (grilled beef) with rice, beans and guacamole, or vegetarian crepes with a cheese sauce or a large salad. Dessert is apple pie and ice cream. The cost is 150 pesos plus tip.

CASA

The Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic met June 19, where members presented lacto-vegetarian main dishes and desserts without granulated sugar. In the main dish category, Michele Lococo took first place with tofu & broccoli over rice noodles with a Thai peanut sauce; John Hawks won second place and the presentation award for spring rolls; Monica Molloy took third place and the People’s Choice award for chile relleno with chickpea, shitake & mixed mushrooms & smoked red pepper sauce.

Allison Quattrocchi won first place and tied for presentation in the dessert category for Danish strawberry summer pie; Robert Schierburg tied for presentation with coconut sticky rice with mango, sweetened with agave; Carol Westbrook took second place and People’s Choice for sweet potato fruit pie and Lizzie Conover won third place for Almond Pear Crostada.

Fourth of July

Two Lakeside organizations will put on the dog for July 4th this year. American Legion Post 7 in Chapala will start with a social hour at 2 p.m. with entertainment by DJ Howard and a dinner of fried chicken, coleslaw, corn of the cob, baked beans and dessert will be served at 3 p.m. A 50-50 raffle will be held. 

Tickets, 180 pesos, are available at the Legion.

Democrats Abroad will hold a U.S. Independence Day Picnic, 4-8 p.m. at the Hotel Montecarlo in Chapala. On the menu will be American style food: Hamburgers, Costco hot dogs with all the fixings, watermelon, chips, potato salad, and apple pie. Also, you can enjoy a cash bar, music by Noe Raygoza, Mike Leisenbach and Karen Procter. Bring your swim suit as the thermal pool will be open.

Lakeside Assistance BBQ

Ranger BBQ will put on a fundraise for the Lakeside Assistance Group August 26, 1 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station). This group works with U.S. and Canadian firefighters and other groups to bring used-but-quality equipment to the volunteer fire departments in north shore Lake Chapala towns. The cost to ship containers filled with this equipment is about U.S.$4,000. Tickets for the BBQ are available from Vince Britton at American Legion Post 7.
