Brits meet
The Lakeside British Society holds its monthly luncheon Saturday, November 4, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic.
Molly Chagollan is the speaker for this event. She grew up on Florida’s east coast where hurricanes are a fact of life. She will share her experiences, storms of all sizes and intensities, and the adventures that went along with them.
Menu choices begin with a small salad or lentil soup; choice of spinach quiche, fish and chips, pork chop, apple sauce and mashed potatoes or a large salad. Dessert is berry pie. The cost is 150 pesos plus tip.

Food Giver
Irma Padilla (left) and Cruz Roja Chapala Consejo President Yolanda Martinez entertained an international crowd of supporters at the Food Giver benefit dinner party held October 27 to raise funds for fueling the emergency clinic’s ambulance fleet. Choosing a Dia de Muertos theme to welcome guests, the hostess dressed up in a Catrina outfit, served Vampire cocktails and decorated the patio of her La Canacinta home with a classic memorial altar dedicated to departed relatives and Red Cross founder Henri Dunant.
Open Circle
David Bryen presents “Beyond Belief” at the next meeting of Open Circle at the Lake Chapala Society, Sunday, November 5, 10:30 a.m. to noon.
A belief is not an idea the mind possesses but rather an idea that possesses the mind. Beliefs are not based in truth! They are mere filters the mind uses to understand and negotiate our world. They are subconscious mechanisms the mind employs to defend against our fears. However, our beliefs may actually perpetuate anxiety. Bryen will explore the possibilities available when we live beyond belief and disempower the mind’s unconscious insistence to be in control.
Bryen coordinates Open Circle, constructs sets at Lakeside Little Theatre, rides his motorcycle, and spends time in his woodworking shop. He has published two books and is currently working on his third. Before retiring and moving here he built his own lake house. His perspective on belief developed during his 35 years in private practice as a depth psychotherapist.

LCS seminar
Lake Chapala Society (LCS) members are invited to attend a TED seminar titled “Can a Divided America Heal?” given by Social Psychologist Dr. Jonathan Haidt, Tuesday, November 7, noon to 1:15 p.m. in the LCS Sala.
How can the United States recover after the negative, partisan presidential election of 2016? Haidt studies the morals that form the basis of our political choices. In conversation with TED Curator Chris Anderson, he describes the patterns of thinking and historical causes that have led to such sharp divisions in America – and provides a vision for how the country might move forward.
LCS bus trips
The Lake Chapala Society is hosting a bus trip to the Guadalajara Zoo, Wednesday, November 8. The cost, including admission and everything else except the Sky Ride, is 440 pesos for members and 540 pesos for non-members. Food options are available at the Zoo. The bus leaves at 9 a.m.
Thursday, November 16, LCS heads to Costco and Home Depot on Avenida Lopez Mateos in Guadalajara. The cost is 350 pesos for members and 450 pesos for non-members. The bus leaves La Floresta at 9:30 a.m. Sign up for either trip at the LCS office.

The Cruz Roja XIV Annual Golf Classic is slated for Thursday, November 9 at the Chapala Country Club.
Last year, sponsors and participants raised funds that, with the help of the Cruz Roja Jalisco, were used to purchase the first new ambulance for the Chapala area in 30 years.
Entry fees include golf and cart rental, a goodie bag full of useful information about the tournament sponsors, breakfast, a bag lunch on the course and the Country Club’s almost legendary Western barbecue. If you don’t play golf, you can still enjoy the dinner. All proceeds go to the Cruz Roja Chapala Delegation. The annual auction/fashion show and sale to benefit the School for Special Children is Thursday, December 7, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Restaurant Las Caballerizas Coxal in the Raquet Club in San Juan Cosala. Remembrance Day
The Lake Chapala Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will hold a Remembrance Day ceremony Saturday, November 11, 10:30 a.m. at the Sisters of the Order of the Benedictinas del Santisimo Sacramento, Calle Jesus Garcia Norte, across from Panino’s Deli in San Antonio Tlayacapan. Valet parking will be available.
After the ceremony, the Post will hold a BBQ meal catered by La Mision Restuarant with music by DJ Phil. Cocktails are served noon and the BBQ at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are 250 pesos.

Folk dancing
The English Country Folk Dance group will meet on Sunday, November 19, 2:45- 5 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar.
English Country Dance is like the dancing seen in movies from the 1700’s and 1800’s – such as in the Jane Austen or Masterpiece Theatre productions. Even people who think they have “two left feet” can do this. The dancing is done to a walking step and all dances are taught first, then “called” (prompted) while you are doing the dance. No experience is necessary and no partner is needed. Come by yourself or bring a partner or friend.

Buddhists
The Heart of Awareness Insight Meditation Community offers meditation opportunities several times each week. Sunday, November 5. the meditation center is open from 9 a.m. to noon for three rounds of sitting and walking meditation. Participants are welcome to come for all or part of this extended practice period. There are two additional hour-long silent meditation opportunities each week on Mondays from 9 to 10 a.m. and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon.
The Sangha’s regular meditation and teaching formal session is Wednesday 4 p.m. The center opens at 3:30 p.m. for those who wish to begin their practice early. November 8, meditation will be followed by a video teaching by Ven. Robina Courtin, on the topic “Unpacking Delusions and Disturbing Emotions,” the second in her series “Unraveling Our Emotions.”
Wednesday and Saturday mornings, from 9-11 a.m., Latika Pierrette Claude offers a gentle and spiritual yoga practice at the Center.
The Heart of Awareness is grounded in the teachings of the Buddha. The community extends the invitation to participate in its various activities to all, regardless of prior experience or affiliation. LCS Spanish classes
The Lake Chapala Society will offer two sessions in December of their popular Introduction to Spanish class that covers the basics for beginners. The first class begins Tuesday, December 5 and continues for three weeks. Class A is noon to 1:30 p.m. on the Gazebo and Class B is 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Sala.
