British Society

The Lakeside British Society holds its monthly luncheon Saturday, September 1, 12:45 p.m. at Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic.

The speaker will be Dr. Santiago Hernandez, who will talk about the new hospital in Ajijic he is involved with.

Menu choices begin with a small salad or mushroom soup; choice of meat pie with mashed potatoes and gravy or vegetarian pasta or a large salad with protein. Dessert is raspberry pie with ice cream. The cost is 150 pesos plus tip.

Open Circle

The Cuarteto Janus will perform at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, September 2, 10:30 a.m., on the patio of the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).

This distinguished quartet of young musicians from Guadalajara is making their second appearance at Open Circle. They were formed in July 2016 under the direction of Christopher Wilshere, with the intention of raising Mexican chamber music to a higher level. Despite having only recently formed, they have already participated in several prestigious international festivals. At Open Circle, they will perform Dvorak’s American Quartet, followed by some Mexican music.

The ensemble consists of Diana Carolina Laguna Rivas, violin; Francisco Vidal Rivera González, violin; Luís Carlos Rincón Barrios, viola; and Areli Medeles Medina, cello.

Blood pressure

Blood Pressure screenings are available to the public Mondays, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Lake Chapala Society.

Labor Day celebration

American Legion Post 7 Chapala will celebrate Labor Day Monday, September 3. Social hour begins 1 p.m. followed by a BBQ rib dinner. Music and dancing follow. Tickets, 220 pesos, are available at Post 7.

LCS Spanish

Spanish classes using the Warren Hardy Spanish-language course begin Monday, September 3, and are given two days per week for 1 1/2-hour sessions through October 22 at the Wilkes Education Center in Ajijic. Several levels of instruction are available. The course program manager is available to answer questions and register students August 27-31 at LCS on the blue patio umbrella.

Introduction to Spanish classes for LCS members are held each month starting the first Tuesday and continue for three weeks. Classes begin September 4 at the LCS campus, noon to 1:30 p.m. This is a casual class that covers the Spanish alphabet, simple vocabulary and phrases for shopping, Mexican culture and the lakeside area. U.S. Voter Assistance

Representatives of Democrats Abroad are available at the Lake Chapala Society every Tuesday through October 23 from 10 a.m. to noon on the Blue Umbrella Patio to assist any U.S. voter in making applications for ballots for the November midterm elections. All U.S. and dual-U.S. citizens who will not be in the United States this fall need to request their absentee ballots before the general deadline of September 22 (for most states) to ensure ballot submission in time for the elections.

LCS TED Talks

Political scientist Erica Chenoweth will discuss “The Success of Non-Violent Civil Resistance” at the next TED Talk, Tuesday, September 4, noon to 1:15 p.m., at the Lake Chapala Society Sala. LCS members only.

No longer available through TED Talks (find it on YouTube), This presentation is extraordinarily appropriate today. If the internet is not available, the facilitator may read the transcript aloud and provide you with copies. This talk is well worth it.

Heart Dancing sessions will be offered in the LCS sala Tuesdays, 4-5:30 p.m. beginning September 4. There is no fee, but the group will be limited to the first 12 people who enroll.

Heart Dancing is expressive, easy body movement that benefits the heart, body and the soul of the dancer. Basic yoga

People interested in learning pickleball, lakeside’s fastest growing outdoor sport, are welcome to take advantage of classes for beginners held Thursdays, 6-7 p.m., at Chapala’s Hotel Montecarlo, Avenida Hidalgo 296.

Consulate at Post 7

A representative of the United States Consulate from Guadalajara will be available at the American Legion Post 7 in Chapala Wednesday, September 12, 9 a.m. Questions concerning passports, visas, or federal benefits can be addressed at that time. Please be prompt to sign up. All expats are welcome.

LCS bus trip

The Lake Chapala Society heads to downtown Guadalajara, Wednesday, September 12.

The bus departs at 10 a.m. from the sculpture in La Floresta.

Cost is 370 pesos for members and 470 pesos for non-members.

Grant applications

The Outreach Committee of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church will accept applications for grants from Lakeside charities through September 24. These grants will be awarded in October.

Democrats Abroad

The Chapala Chapter of Democrats Abroad meets Monday, September 17, 4 p.m. at Fonda Doña Lola’s Restaurant, (across from La Casa del Waffle) in West Ajijic. A cash bar will be available.

The program will provide an update on current chapter activities and will feature a video presentation on “The New Seven Dirty Words” by Bari Weiss of the New York Times. All members, visitors and new residents at lakeside are welcome to attend all monthly meetings and special events.

Fiesta Mexicana

The Lake Chapala Society will hold a Mexican Fiesta September 21, 4-7 p.m. Tickets, include a Mexican meal, complementary drink, mariachi and ballet folklorico. Tickets are at the LCS office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cooking class

The Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) hosts a cooking class with guest instructor, Marie-Lyse, an award winning Cordon Bleu chef from Sri Lanka, Monday or Tuesday, October 1 and 2, noon to 5 p.m. The classes are limited to 16 people each. The menu to be created includes potato Bhaji Pakoras, rice vermicelli Buriani, two chutneys, Sri Lankan prawn curry, and poached Ataulfo mango mousse. Insight Meditation

The Heart of Awareness Insight Meditation Community offers multiple opportunities each week for silent meditation: Sundays, 9 a.m., Wednesdays, 4 p.m., and Thursdays, 11 a.m. All sessions are open to the public regardless of experience or affiliation. Chairs and cushions are provided as well as brief written instructions on meditation for beginners.

Sunday, September 2, the center is open until noon.

Wednesday, September 5, the meditation period will be followed by by an audio from the “Waking Up” series. Sam Harris and Joseph Goldstein answer questions about the practice of mindfulness. They discuss negative emotions, the importance of ethics, the concept of enlightenment, and other topics. Harris is a best-selling author and the host of the Waking Up Podcast, covering a wide range of topics but generally focus on how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live. Goldstein has been leading insight and lovingkindness meditation retreats worldwide since 1974.

Everyone is welcome to come for just the meditation or the program and discussion, or both. The session ends at 6 p.m.

A yoga class is offered at The Heart of Awareness on Thursdays from 9-10:45 a.m.
