Fun holiday events

• Century 21 holds a Dia de los Muertos evening event, Saturday, October 30, 5 to 9 p.m. at the Santa Monica Campestre area, just off the Guadalajara-Chapala highway, a block north of the entrance to the Libramiento.

pg16aAn altar to the dead will be exhibited, a pre-Hispanic Day of the Dead performance will be staged, marshmallows roasted on a fire pit and Mexican treats served. All are welcome. Reservations: 376-766-2613. See map location at santamonicachapala.com.

• Scallions Ajijic Bistro holds a Halloween costume contest Saturday, October 30, with music by Traficantes Rock’N’Latin. Prizes for the best costumes.

• El BarCo throws a Halloween party, Sunday, October 31, 6 p.m., on their Skybar, with Sopa de Piedra bringing the ghouls out to dance.

• Alfredo Perez will teach how to build a Day of the Dead altar Monday and Tuesday, November 1 and 2, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS), The altar will be finished on the second day.

• Huerto Café in Riberas del Pilar holds a Dia de los Muertos event, Monday, November 1, 5 p.m., with Son del Lago playing traditional Mexican music. Reservations: 376-108-0834.

• Manix puts on a Day of the Dead celebration and gives out prizes for the best costumes, Tuesday, November 2. Enjoy a three-course dinner of roast suckling pig and traditional dishes. Reservations: 376-766-0061.

• Ray Velvet is holding a Day of the Dead event that includes an acoustic concert in Spanish with Barbara Sagrey, Tuesday, November 2, beginning 6 p.m. at Casa Domenech inside the Lake Chapala Society. A four-course Mexican fusion dinner is part of the fun. Reservations at Casa Domenech.

ANAVETS Mexico

Thursday November 11, ANAVETS Mexico holds a combined Remembrance and Veterans Day Service at Mama’s Musical Bar starting at 10:45 a.m. Attendees are asked to be seated by 10:40 a.m. The service is open to everyone. After the service, a luncheon will be served, with entertainment by The Crooners.

Veteran’s Day

American Legion Post 7 will hold a Veterans Day service at 10:55 a.m. Thursday, November 11, at the Post, Morelos 114 in Chapala. All are welcome. A celebration and dinner begins 1 p.m. Music will be provided by Sweet Harmony. A 50-50 raffle will benefit veterans’ relief.

The menu is smoked pork chop, garlic mashed potatoes and gravy, carrots, salad, roll and dessert. Tickets, 300 pesos, are available at the Post Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 7 p.m. There will be no tickets sold on the day of the event.

Open Circle

Dr. Enrique Lopez presents “Maintain Your Brain” at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, October 31, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.

Dr. Lopez will provide practical tools and lifestyle tips for keeping the brain healthy and vital. Additionally, he will describe how professionals diagnose and assess cognitive disorders and differentiate between normal aging and a cognitive disorder such as dementia.
Dr. Lopez is a psychologist/neuropsychologist and has been an allied health professional at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences since 2004. He completed a post-doctorate fellowship in neuropsychology at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital in 2000. Dr. Lopez attended Occidental College in Los Angeles from 1985 to 1989 with a major in psychology and minor in Spanish literature.

Foodbank Lakeside

A fundraising bazaar to benefit the mudslide and relief victims in Ajijic and San Juan Cosala will be held Saturday, November 6, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Avenida de la Ribera, Riberas del Pilar 219-B. High quality, almost-new clothes, shoes, household items and even a poker table will be for sale.

Free lecture series

Betty Steinhauer offers a free lecture series, “Journey of a Traveler … culture and life experiences,” at the Lake Chapala Society November 9, 10, 16, 17, 30 and December 2, 10 a.m. to noon, on the mural patio.

Steinhauer is a traveler and homeless by choice. “Eight years ago I sold everything, packed up my life in Canada and started to travel the world with a difference, learning from every person that I met and every challenging situation I found myself in,” she says.

Democrats Abroad

Democrats Abroad The Americas will hold a virtual regional annual meeting/workshop to learn new skills, hear updates from global teams and strategize for Getting Out the Vote in 2022.
