A Mixed Martial Arts event will be held Saturday, July 16, from 7 p.m. at Huerta de Serna (home of Tuesday Farmers Market). Support local athletes, both male and female, in ten different bouts.

A dance party and presentation of candidates for Ajijic Fiestas Patrias Queen will be held Saturday, July 16, from 8 p.m., at Bar La Martina, above Restaurant El Jardìn on the plaza. Music by La Sonora Pachanguera. Tickets are 100 pesos at the door.

Open Circle

Rachel McMillen will talk about “Ancient Knowledge for Modern Times” at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, July 17, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society. Reservations: opencircleajijic.org.

McMillen is the author of the popular Dan Connor mystery series, which includes “Dark Moon Walking” and “Black Tide Rising,” both nominated for an Arthur Award.

Born in England and raised in Australia, she lived most of her life in Canada, where she spent 30 years sailing the remote west coast that provides the settings for her novels.

McMillen is a former teacher and adult educator whose short stories, poems and articles can be found in numerous anthologies and magazines.

She has served as president of various environmental organizations, as well as theater companies and community groups.

Chapala Birders

Tuesday, July 19, birders will meet at 8:15 a.m. at the entrance to Cristiania Park in Chapala. Expect to see an interesting selection of species in the park and on the shore of the lake. At about 10 a.m., the group will go to La Palapa de Don Juan for breakfast and to complete the bird list.

Bird walks are open to all those interested in birds, both beginners and experienced birders. Just bring binoculars.

Pepe Magaña Art Auction

More than 30 works of art and dozens of other items will be up for grabs at an auction organized to benefit Chapala veterinarian Pepe Magaña, who has been recently diagnosed with cancer. The event is Sunday, July 31, at the PabloLola Galleria de Arte, Calle 16 de Septiembre 1, Ajijic. Registration for buyers starts noon, the auction is between 1 and 4 p.m.

Participating artists include Lola Picó, Alfi Guilera, Susana Soto Poblete, Gerardo Jesús, Lizette Aguilar, Adis Soriano, Claudia Neri, Federico Luquin, Ana Favela, Guadalupe Aguilar, María Elena, Lola Pelayo and Alejandra Davila,

Quince fest

Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos holds its annual Festival del Membrillo (Quince Festival), Friday to Sunday, July 29-31. The guest of honor is the town of Cocula, which prides itself on being the cradle of mariachi music. The action takes place on the main plaza where banda music by various groups will keep the crowd moving in the evenings and food and drink options will be plentiful. Exhibits of fruit, quince products, crafts and more will be displayed, and contests of photography and gastronomy will take place daily.

Anavets Xmas fundraiser

Anavets (Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans Association Canada) Mexico Unit 19 holds its third annual teddy bear picnic in support of Lakeside Children at Christmas, on Thursday, August 4, at Mama’s Musical Bar in San Antonio Tlayacapan. A social hour begins at 2 p.m.; the meal at 3 p.m. Daniel Cordero will entertain.
