Open Circle
The volunteers at Lucky Dog Rescue and Adoption Center will talk about the work they do at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, October 9, 10:30 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.
Lucky Dog Rescue and Adoption Center is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of abandoned and abused dogs in the Lake Chapala area. Lucky Dog is a no-kill shelter run solely by a group of dedicated volunteers, led by a volunteer board. Their only income is from private donations.
Lucky volunteers ensure the dogs are walked, fed and loved daily. Vet appointments, routine vaccinations, worm and flea treatments, and adoption services are also handled by volunteers.
Lucky Dog has expanded a lot since its inception in 2012, adding additional runs, a playing/training field, safety doors on the kennels, shade coverings for the play yards, and more.
Lucky Dog is its own entity and relies on private donations to cover costs. Services provided for the dogs include spay/neuter, emergency services, long-term recovery care, special foods and medicines and, of course, the loving care from volunteers. For most dogs the costs are low, but costs for injured or sick dogs can be much more, including surgery, other medical needs and the time and care required for healing. The current vet at Lucky Dog is Laura Medina Gomez, who visits weekly, and offers her time and services at a generous price.

Free flu shots in Joco
Vaccinations for protection against influenza are available free of charge as of this week at two locations in Jocotepec. The shots are being offered to the most vulnerable population sectors that includes senior citizens, pregnant women, children under age five and health care personnel.
As part of a vaccination campaign concentrated from October through December, Jalisco’s Department of Health is supplying two million doses to public health care facilities throughout the state, including the Hospital Comunitario de Jocotepec on the highway at El Chante and the municipality’s Centro de Salud located at Calle Donato Guerra 6. Best hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
American Legion events
• American Legion Post 7, Morelos 1145 in Chapala, will hold a Martini Night, Friday, October 7, 5 to 8 p.m. Choose from six different martinis at 60 pesos each and small charcutier plates for 100 pesos. The bartenders are offering chocolate, lemon drop, Gibson, dirty and classic and Mexican martinis. If you have a favorite that’s not on this list, they will give it a shot if they have the ingredients.
• Wednesday, October 12, 3 to 6 p.m., the Legion is hosting a happy hour for military veterans from all countries and service branches. No membership is required. Beers and drinks will be 25 pesos.
• Friday, October 14, Post 7’s Auxiliary will put on an Octoberfest with a social hour beginning 2 p.m. and dinner from 3 p.m. On the menu is schnitzel, German potato salad, green beans with apples and Black Forest cake. A vegetarian option is available. Entertainment by Sweet Harmony. Tickets are 300 pesos. Sorry, no pets.
• Tuesday, October 18, Zona Cuba and Tito will perform for a Cuban dance night, 5 to 8 p.m. Mojitos are 50 pesos. 200 pesos gets you a pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw and pickles. Call Bonnie at 510-927-0908. Limited to 150 tickets.
Canadian Thanksgiving
The Canadian Veterans Support Association (CVSA) will celebrate a traditional Canadian Thanksgiving dinner at Sunrise Restaurant in San Antonio Tlayacapan, Monday, October 10. Tickets, 350 pesos, are available at Kinda Bazaar in Riberas del Pilar or call John Kelly at 331-758-0676.
Other Thanksgiving options include Panino’s, Manix, Bobby’s Escondido and various others.
Chapala Birders
Lake Chapala Birders is an informal group of bird observers led by John and Rosemary Keeling. Bird-walks are open to all those interested in birds, both beginners and experienced birders. Just bring binoculars. There are always knowledgeable birders on hand to help identify the species. Information: chapalabirders. org.
Wednesday, October 12, the birders will meet at 8:15 a.m. at Puerta Nueva on the west side of Ajijic. Expect to see some shore birds and some birds in the tall trees along the street. At about 10 a.m. the group heads to Fonda Doña Lola Restaurant for breakfast and to complete the bird list.
How to Get There: Drive about one mile (3 km) west from Calle Colon, past the cemetery; then take the next left exit signed “Villa Lucerna;” turn left after one block and immediately turn right at the sign Puerta Nueva; park on the side of the street close to this intersection.

Ajijic benefit food fair
Ajijic’s Pasión de Cristo and Manos Solidarios volunteer organizations are joining forces to put on a two-day food fair to benefit local families facing financial distress to provide health care for ailing relatives.
The Ajijic Nos Cuida Kermés will take place at the village plaza Saturday, October 15, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, October 16, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The families in dire need of help will set up more than 20 stands around the square to sell a variety of foods and snacks. The organizers have lined up music and dance performances to keep the public entertained on both days. Local barbers will be there on Saturday to offer grooming services to those in attendance, chipping in their proceeds to the event’s beneficiaries.
“Together we have been able to create a supportive community where the welfare of others is a priority,” says Passion Play founder Lalo Ramos. “We only need you to come and to make this event a success for our neighbors in need.”
