Ecology Fest

Chapala City Hall and the Movimento Ambiental Solidario (MAS—the new moniker of the Ajijic recycling program) are holding a Fiesta de Ecologia Sunday, February 5, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Parque de la Cristiania in Chapala.

The fiesta will feature exhibits, demonstrations and presentations concerning recycling and meeting environmental challenges, as well as offering entertainment, food and drink. Admission to the fiesta is free.

pg16b“MAS is working hard to bring recycling to the Ribera de Chapala,” says Michael Searles, president of MAS. “Thus far we’ve provided recycling within Ajijic Village and West Ajijic. Our Centro de Acopio (recycling center) in West Ajijic is fully functional and we are selling our recycled materials, which allows us to both expand our capabilities and donate back to the community. We have just installed large recycling bins in Cristianía Park and are working closely with the municipio to obtain a location for a second Centro de Acopio in Chapala. Our long-term goal is to tackle each of the environmental problems we are facing now and in the future.”

The Fiesta will offer a day-long program of entertainment and educational information on recycling. Among the entertainers will be The Pedro Rey Mariachi School musicians, Latin Icons: A Tribute to The Greatest Voices of Mexico.

Among the presenters will be Chapala Mayor Alejandro Aguirre Curiel and representatives from the Reality Climate Project who will provide their presentation in both English and Spanish. There will be a children’s program as well as a silent auction and raffle. Food vendors from local restaurants will be on hand.

Free bus transportation to Cristianía Park from Ajijic will depart from the access road in front of Walmart starting at 9:45 a.m. and running throughout the day.

“It’s our hope that everyone will come and have both a great time and learn what they can do to preserve our environment,” says Searles. “We live in a paradise but without our efforts and vigilance it is a paradise easily lost.”
