Semana Santa (Holy Week) is an important time for relaxation for Mexican people and many businesses will close their doors for the entire week.
Most schools pack up for a two-week Easter break this Friday and won’t reopen until Monday, April 16. Government offices, banks, consulates and many shops and services will be closed on Thursday, April 5 and Friday, April 6. Supermarkets will stay open over the holiday. Semana Santa is a traditional time for families to take a vacation. Maids and gardeners may not be around and many mom-and-pop stores will shut up shop for the week. Finding emergency service personnel may also be a problem. Both the Guadalajara and Ajijic offices of the Guadalajara Reporter will close during Holy Week and reopen on Monday, April 9.
